From the editor
Sound the horns, now we raid and pillage. Tonight, we dine in Valhalla!
Vikings hold such a visceral place in the hearts and minds of many, particularly
those of European descent. Stories handed down through the ages, immortalized
in myths and legends, popularized in books and movies, the mighty Norseman is a
beast to be feared, a tale told by parents to frighten their children into bed. A great
deal has been written about the Vikings and their effect on the psyche of Dark Age
Europe, so much that it’s sometimes tough to rustle up a fresh angle.
When Dan* and I sit down for our trans-Atlantic “editorial” meetings we have a
lot of fun throwing around ideas and looking for ways to switch things up a bit (or
at least not repeat the same thing too closely). The refinement for this month’s
theme, looking at the kingdom the Vikings carved for themselves in Ireland,
actually came from Paul Leach - one of our regular contributors and a man
passionate about all manner of Dark Age/Ancients wargaming. It was through
working with Paul on this topic that we got to expand our knowledge of the
political landscape of 9th and 10th Century Ireland, a landscape that made it
relatively easy for the Vikings to conquer but impossible to control.

We really enjoy working with our contributors to bring as much expert knowledge
to bear as we can on our themes. In the coming months you’ll see a few more
approaches like this thanks to: Sam Mustafa (Napoleonics), Paul Leach (ACW),
Neil Smith (The English Longbowman), and Jim Graham (Chariot Wars). We
hope you enjoy them all.
With so much great content and loads more advertisers wanting to jump on board,
we’re expanding the magazine by another EIGHT pages, that’s 40 more than this
time last year! This issue we’ve got so much material we’ve had to move roughly
six pages of Reviews to our “bonus” web content. So enjoy all of the fruits of the
labors of our contributors, we think it has been well earned.

THE BEAST GOES PLASTIC!
The latest company to bite the plastic bullet and
enter the fray with their own 28mm hard plastic
figures is Dark Age impresarios Gripping Beast.
Their already well-established range of metal
miniatures is being joined by a box of
plastic Vikings.
The Viking Hirdmen box contains 44 multi-pose figures along with bases and
banners. The Beast (under their plastics’’ subsidiary of GBP) will be following
up the Hirdmen with a set of Saxon Thegns, which will have a similar box
