From the editor
Civil Wars, it’s a ridiculously large topic to try and cover in five articles in one magazine!
Thinking of magazine themes is always fun and some of the topics we come up with are
intentionally very ‘open-range’. This month’s theme of
Civil Wars - By the Sword Divided,
is one of those themes that could actually fill all the pages in
Wargames Illustrated
for
umpteen years, so with this issue we’re not pretending to do anything more than tenuously
link a few articles under a banner that could easily accommodate several thousand more.
We are pleased with the few thematic pieces that have made the final cut though.
Following Neil Smith’s introduction piece, which suggests what civil wars can offer
wargamers, we cover civil war gaming in the ancient Roman period and then in the
Shogunate Wars in Japan, before turning our attention to a couple of the civil war big
hitters in the form of articles for the English and American Civil Wars. With the ACW we
have intentionally avoided scenarios and gone for a couple of articles on more eccentric
subjects: American Civil War artillery and a comparison piece between two of last year’s
big ACW rule releases:
Longstreet
and
Across a Deadly Field.
As well as civil war enthusiasts, model makers are also well catered for in this issue of
WI,
with three articles covering the making of bell tents, an English church and Bruce Weigle’s
eye-catching 6mm terrain. Plus we have
Flames Of War, Open Combat,
the French
Foreign Legion, Alessio Cavatore and more.

FLAMES OF WAR NEWS
This month sees us turn our attention to the British forces driving into
the heart of Germany with the new plastic Comet tank. The Comet
represented the best of everything with speed, a good gun, and better
armour than its predecessor (the Cromwell). We also have a completely
re-sculpted Universal Carrier model. This might not sound that
impressive by itself but the vehicle comes cast in resin with no base
underneath and once painted it will look like all the other tanks on the
table-top! And you won’t have to glue on fiddly tracks either! We haven’t
forgotten the Germans though as they can expect to receive some pretty
big guns with a couple of FlaK Wagons with 8.8cm guns or a 10.5cm gun!
They will be a nasty surprise for an unwary tank commander.
We also have a special surprise this month with the release of

covering everything from the basics of how to paint faces, weapons and tracks, through to detailed

mighty Goths and Sarmatians to the status of vassals. This
