This issue of
Wargames Illustrated
is released at Salute 2016 and it may be that you are
sat at one of the classy plastic patio furniture tables in London’s Excel taking a break from
your shopping, sightseeing and game participation and are leafing through your new copy of
Wargames Illustrated
right now. If that is the case, we hope you have had time to call by the
Wargames Illustrated
Participation Zone, take part in one of our painting demos and play in
one of our games, particularly our Northwest Frontier game - our showpiece for this year’s
show - featured in more detail in next month’s mag.
The title of this issue’s theme, which inspired our Salute table - Soldiers of the Queen
- probably conjures up the campaigns of Queen Victoria’s reign in the minds of most
wargamers and you will certainly find several Victorian angled articles in the pages ahead,
with a look at gaming the Second Opium War and Victoria’s soldiers in miniature, amongst
others; but we also take in a couple of less obvious female rulers in the guise of Queen
Jadwiga of Lithuania and the Empress Matilda of Anjou, both of whom take our theme away
from the more predictable colonial context.
Outside of our theme content we take an early look at a couple of the big games from Salute
2016, the Essex Gamesters Vietnam board and Infamy Miniatures Steampunk masterpiece,
created by model making maestro Dave Taylor. We also spotlight two eagerly anticipated
new rule sets in
Sharp Practice II
and
The Men Who Would Be Kings.

Grant and Bragg in Central Tennessee
Following the disastrous defeat at Chickamauga,
Union forces were in disarray and the tactically vital
Chattanooga was under siege and on the brink of falling.
Secretary of War William Stanton ordered Ulysses Grant
to send the Army of Tennessee to reinforce Chattanooga.
Grant had already reacted.
The situation was dire. It required outstanding leadership
to rescue the situation. President Abraham Lincoln
decided Grant was the man for the occasion. In early
October, Grant was promoted to command of the
Military District of Mississippi and told to clean up the
mess created by Chickamauga. With those orders a new
campaign began: the Chattanooga Campaign. This book
tracks how over the next three months Grant would orchestrate the movements of three
Union Armies - The Army of the Cumberland, The Army of the Tennessee, and two Corps
from the Army of the Potomac. He would lead them into a series of battles that saw them
break the siege of Chattanooga before in three battles in three days the Union forces broke
the Confederate army entrenched on the heights overlooking Chattanooga.
