From the editor
The essence of wargaming is a table full of rank-upon-rank of painted figures, wheeling,
marching and manoeuvring in unison, whilst their general issues sweeping orders and
contemplates his army’s next flanking move or cavalry charge…. Or is it? Is the essence
of gaming taking on the role of a single character figure in his struggle for survival on the
tabletop. Is it all about the derring-dos of this individual and his small band of brothers, and
the player’s ability to use their well defined traits to his advantage and win the game.
Rather than either being the essence of wargaming, the above are descriptions of two well-
established branches of our hobby; big battle and skirmish wargaming.
Over the last few years several people have told me that “skirmish wargaming is very
popular at the moment” and with games such as
Saga, Bolt Action
and
7TV
all amongst the
top sellers in the hobby it’s hard to disagree, but that’s not to say skirmish gaming doesn’t
have a long and well established tradition of popularity in our hobby and we are lucky to
have Mike Blake writing for us this month, the man who supplied us with one of the very
first skirmish rulesets, and as an active member of the Skirmish Wargames Group, is well
placed to educate us on the history of the movement.
Skirmish wargaming forms the theme for this month’s magazine with several articles
dedicated to the subject. But there is plenty of Big Battle action to enjoy as well - check out
our piece on Austerlitz, which will have skirmish die-hards running for cover!
There is plenty more - skirmish and other - wargaming goodness to get into this month, so
I’ll stop rattling and let you get on with it!

En Garde!
is a small-scale skirmish game based on
the successful
Ronin
rules, in which small groups of
warriors fight each other for honour or riches. Rather
than just rolling a few dice, the rules allow players
to make tactical decisions about how the models that
they control will fight - offensively, defensively, or by
applying special skills and abilities.
En Garde!
covers the
conflicts of the 16th, 17th and early 18th centuries, when
black-powder weapons started to become common in
battle but martial prowess still determined the outcome.
Play as Border Reivers, Conquistadors, Landsknechts,
Aztecs, French Musketeers, Caribbean Pirates and many
more, in scenarios that evoke classic engagements of the
genre. Simple campaign rules allow multiple scenarios to be played in sequence and permit
warbands to develop over time. An appendix is also included to provide brief rules for
supernatural creatures of the period - monsters, demons, revenants and witches - and new
abilities and equipment to fight them, making

AROUND THE GLOBE
WARGAMING – THE MOVIE!
Have you ever wanted to be a movie star? Well, this could be your chance or, at the
very least, you’ll have an opportunity to see a different way to share the hobby!
Irish production company Sheefra Films has started work on a feature length documentary
on wargaming. The director of the film, James O’ Sullivan, and director of photography,
Jack Lunt, dropped by the
WI
office lately to update us on progress. “We’re at the end of
our second week of shooting in Nottingham, the beating heart of the wargames industry,
and have been bowled over by the generosity and openness of everyone we’ve met and
interviewed so far. There’s a remarkable story emerging here.”
With the Nottingham leg of the shoot drawing to a close, the crew are gearing up
for the next steps. “We’ve weeks of studio work lined up next, then the London
part of the shoot to prep for,” explains the director. “The wargaming community
is such a broad church. There’s really so much to cover if you want to do it right.
Our cameras will certainly be rolling on this one for some time yet.”
The film is scheduled for completion in mid-2016 and should start popping up
at film festivals towards the end of 2016. The team are contactable by email at:

IN A BOX!
Sometimes, you need a game which is fast, fun and simple to play, the sort of game which can be carried in a box, put down
on a table and provides everything you need to game with your mates.
One such game is
Tanks
from Battlefront Ltd. This is a two player game of tank versus tank combat, designed to last around 30
minutes. Using the rules, you can pick your tanks and crew, add a wealth of upgrades and try them on the tabletop, knowing that if
it doesn’t work out, you can start all over again in a short space of time!
Although you get everything you need in the starter set, expansion sets will enable you to add new tanks and upgrades to your
arsenal. You can also play campaign scenarios at your local game store or take part in competitive play.
Out early in 2016,

is a great way for the beginner and expert alike to enjoy games set in World War Two.
