When is Modern not Modern - when it’s Ultra Modern. At least that’s what we’ve decided
here at
Wargames Illustrated.
For this month’s magazine theme we wanted to go beyond
World War Two, but stop before the Millennium, so we’ve decided that the Modern ‘period’
covers 1946 to 1999 and in this issue we have seven articles that shelter comfortably beneath
our “Modern” umbrella.

After our visit last year, we realized that this is a great opportunity to take
a look at some fantastic games and miniatures that would be of interest to
our readers. So, this time around, we’ll be reporting from the event, with a
follow up
Wargames Illustrated ‘Spotted At...’
feature in forthcoming print
and digital magazines. We’ll also be putting together a video report for our
Prime members.
As a focal point for Hobby Games, UKGE attracts more than 300 games
companies, from independent startups to major players in the industry,
all of whom are looking to release new games and demonstrate exciting
prototypes.
UKGE is not just for single gaming enthusiasts or those over a certain
age. Families and younger visitors are well catered for with a dedicated
family zone. There are demonstrations throughout the Trade Hall of all
the best and newest games, either for the family audience or those looking
for more complex games. Plus, at every demo table or trade stand, there
is someone on hand to guide you through how to play. Of course, you can
also walk away with copies of many of the games, for a suitable fee!
Alongside all that is a food festival and a full seminar programme,
looking at all aspects of the hobby games world. There is also a dedicated
Publisher-Designer Track where budding games designers can find out
how to design and publish their game ideas.

Men of Bronze
is a wargame that allows you to play
out Classical Greek hoplite battles on the tabletop.
Players are
Strategoi
(generals) leading phalanxes of
bronze-clad warriors in pursuit of fame, glory, and
the honour of their city-states. To win such prizes,
however, you must prove your mettle, display your
valour, and bring the other Strategoi to their knees!
Designed to recreate small battles or larger skirmishes with 50-80 figures
per side, each army will have its own unique mix of rules, advantages,
backgrounds, and abilities. Strategoi must understand and appreciate the
strengths and weaknesses of their forces in order to win glory on the battlefield.
Of course, there’s no telling what tricks a rival Strategos might have up his
tunic sleeves…

Society of Ancients Battle Day
The sixteenth annual Society of Ancients Battle Day, will take place on Saturday 30 March 2019. Sycamore Hall, Drayton
Road, Bletchley, Near Milton Keynes, MK2 3RR
The Celts at first were ignorant of the arrival of Atilius and imagined from what they saw, that Aemilius’ cavalry had
got round their flank in the night and were engaged in occupying the position. They therefore at once sent on their
own cavalry and some of their light-armed troops to dispute the possession of the hill. But very soon they learnt of
Gaius’ presence from one of the prisoners brought in, and lost no time in drawing up their infantry, deploying them so
that they faced both front and rear, since, both from the intelligence that reached them and from what was happening
before their eyes, they knew that the one army was following them, and they expected to meet the other in their front.
The Gauls discover they are trapped between two Roman armies and must fight it out with both of them in order to
escape with their loot.
For our sixteenth annual Battle Day, we once again invite you to a unique day’s wargaming.
The battle: Telamon 225 BC - two Roman consular armies catch up with the raiding Gallic army that is trying to
return home with all its loot. With enemy to front and rear, the Gauls must fight back to back and defeat both Roman
armies to make their escape.
The aims of the day remain the same as ever:
• To have fun!
• To gather as many ancient and medieval wargamers as possible to refight a historical battle.
• To fight the same battle simultaneously on many tables, using a different set of rules on each table.
The day will run from 9am until 5pm, with an hour either side to set up and pack away.
We will have the usual pre-battle introduction to Telamon, this year given by well-known author and Society member
Duncan Head, putting the battle into its historical context and highlighting its controversies.
And of course, The Society of Ancients will be awarding a number of prizes (for various criteria, some more frivolous
than others) to the wargamers on the day, including prizes for Best Game and Best Terrain.
To offer to stage a game - contact Richard Lockwood at battleday@soa.org.uk. But in any case, come along and take
part as a player - most if not all of the games have room to take extra players and we have always managed to place
people with a game. Of course, some like to attend just as a spectator and that too is fine.
The cost of attending the Battle Day, to contribute towards hire of venue and tables, is £10 (juniors and students free).
