I remember my old history teacher telling the class “Britain has only ever been successfully
invaded three times throughout history. Once by the Romans, then by the Anglo-Saxons and
finally by the Normans in 1066”. As a twelve year old boy I just scribbled this down in my
jotter and didn’t say “What about the Dutch invasion of 1688 - how did this differ from your
distinction of the Norman Invasion?” and “How did the Anglo-Saxon invasion technically
differ from the Viking Invasion?” Mainly because I had never heard of the Dutch Invasion/
Glorious Revolution at the time and I’m still not technically sure how the Anglo-Saxon
invasion differs from the Viking one - other than being more successful. Suffice to say, the
history of the invasions of Britain is not quite as straight forward and is significantly more
interesting than Mr Dams might have had me and the rest of the class believe.
In this issue of
Wargames Illustrated
we explore some of the more interesting invasions of
Britain, including those that failed and some from literature which never actually happened
at all, but could have done. Also look out for our features on two new ‘buzzy’ games,

We’ve been invited to the special ‘Press
Only’ launch of this new series of events that
is bursting upon the UK wargames scene.
Wargaming Holidays is a fresh take on the
wargaming weekend industry. It aims to
combine narratively driven campaigns with relaxing accommodation and
a true catering experience. Participants can unwind after a hard day’s battling and
fully immerse themselves in aspects of the hobby, perhaps trying out a new period
or a new set of rules.
This is a family run business, which started out in March 2019 and has been
preparing for a full launch ever since! Each weekend campaign is based upon a
specific scenario or theme. For this ‘Press Only’ introduction to what is on offer,
the theme is World War Two,
more specifically the Tilly-Sur-Seulles campaign.
We’ll be exploring the struggle for the XXX Corps to take Tilly-sur-Seulles from
the grip of the Panzer Lehr. This explosive scenario starts off with a brave charge
by the 8th Durham Light Infantry supported by the 24th Lancers against the
venerable 901st Panzer Grenadier Regiment.
The scenario spans two months of continuous combat. All the terrain has been
sculpted specifically to both current topographical maps and wartime maps
of 1944. Our game system for the weekend is
Chain of Command,
helping to
showcase the platoon level struggle of the 8th Durham Light Infantry and the
901st Panzer Grenadier Regiment whilst leading to an explosive finale.
Familiarity with the rules is not necessary as we will be taught ‘how to’ both
through a tutorial scenario on Friday night or as we go along. All miniatures,
dice and measuring tools are provided, so no need to bring your own. It’s also
rumoured that Mr. Rich Clarke, one half of the Too Fat Lardies team behind the
hugely popular
Chain of Command
rules system will also be attending.
Of course, we’ll be bringing you an account of our adventures in a future issue,
and a full set of photographs to show what was on offer, from good food and
company to purpose built terrain and toys.

LATIN AMERICAN CONFLICTS, 1900–70
General Military
From the Banana Wars of the early 20th century through to the Football War of 1969, South and Central
America has been a hotbed of revolutions, rebellions and conflicts as diverse as they are numerous.
Some were small-scale affairs involving the poorly armed forces of Central American armies with rifles,
machetes and a few aged machine guns. Others were full-scale conflicts involving sophisticated armies
equipped with tanks, artillery and aircraft, and hundreds of thousands of troops. These wars often went largely unreported
in the West, which was preoccupied with its own problems in fighting two world wars and dealing with Cold War tensions.
Fully illustrated with a wealth of rare photographs, this fascinating story sheds light on seven decades of a continent in conflict
that is rarely covered in English.
