Welcome to the
General’s Handbook 2020,
a guide to playing games in the Mortal Realms. Packed with
inspiration and brimming with battles, this volume explores all kinds of new and interesting ways for you to enjoy
Warhammer Age of Sigmar.
This book expands on the
Warhammer Age of Sigmar core
rules to support an array of gaming
styles that suit all hobbyists,
from casual collectors who play
occasional games with their
friends to veteran warriors who
spend years honing their forces for
competitive tournaments.
Everyone enjoys the Games
Workshop hobby in different ways.
Some are avid painters who collect
stunning centrepiece models,
while others immerse themselves
in gripping tales of the realms. For
some, though, using their collections
to play games against like-minded
opponents across the tabletop is at
the very heart of their hobby. If you
fall into the latter category, then
this book is for you, as it focuses on
that aspect of the hobby where the
miniatures meet the battlefield.
It is important to note that all of
the rules presented in this book are
optional; they can be used, or not, in
any combination that you and your
tabletop adversaries find enjoyable.
To this end, the

has been designed to work as
a gaming toolbox, providing many
options to get the dice rolling and
play with your collection of Citadel
Miniatures on the tabletop.
The different ways to combine the
rules in this book are practically
endless, and this flexible system
ensures that everyone can find a
style of play that suits them. The

designed with a particular focus on
team gaming and doubles events
in mind; if you’re looking to run
exciting multiplayer battles, you’ll
find a swathe of content in this book
alongside plenty of new rules for
traditional one-on-one gaming.

OPEN PLAY
Open play is the first type of play
that is covered, and it is the most
flexible style because it can be as
simple or as complex as you like.
Simply pick any Citadel Miniatures
and start playing.
In the open play section (
pg 6-43
),
you’ll find all the rules for playing
Skies of Slaughter – a fantastic new
way of using your Age of Sigmar
miniatures to fight deadly high-
octane dogfights in the skies of
the Mortal Realms. There are even
rules for running Skies of Slaughter
campaigns that feature whole wings
of fighters, where your favourite
flying monsters will grow in power
the more games you play with them.
NARRATIVE PLAY
THREE WAYS TO PLAY
The first three sections of this book
provide rules for three different
gaming styles: open play, narrative
play and matched play.
Narrative play is based around
the stories of the Mortal Realms,
either those you can read in our
books or those you write yourself.
Narrative play can involve one-off
battles fought between mighty
heroes or multiple games linked
via a campaign. In the narrative
play section (
pg 44-67
), you will
find a suite of special rules that you
can ‘plug in’ to lend an immediate
narrative to any team battle. For
those looking to take doubles
gaming further, the Whisper Engine
campaign focuses on and celebrates
team gaming, challenging you and
your friends to use all your cunning
and scheme your way to victory!
This section also contains the Anvil
of Apotheosis, a toolbox with which
you can create your own legendary
characters to battle in the Mortal
Realms. This system has been
designed to be quick, easy and fun to
use – the combinations of mounts,
weapons and abilities are vast, so if
you can dream of a cool character to
lead your army to glorious victory,
you’ll have all the resources you need
to bring them to life on the tabletop.

THE MOST
IMPORTANT RULE

In a game as detailed and wide-
ranging as Warhammer Age
of Sigmar, there may be times
when you are not sure exactly
how to resolve a situation that
has come up during play.
When this happens, have a
quick chat with your opponent
and apply the solution that
makes the most sense to you
both (or seems the most fun!).
If no single solution presents
itself, both of you should roll a
dice, and whoever rolls higher
gets to choose what happens.
This means you can swiftly
and easily resolve the issue,
allowing you both to get on
with the fighting!
The final section of this book
is called Conquest Unbound
(
pg 110-129
) and offers a variety of
tournament packs for different styles
of matched play events, allowing
you to lead your army to victory in
competitive play. Also included is an
Open War army generator, enabling
you to quickly create a force and get
straight into the action.
Whatever style of game you
choose and however you use your
miniatures, there is no right or
wrong way to play Warhammer
Age of Sigmar, so long as everyone
adheres to the Most Important Rule.
We’re all here to have fun, after all!
Matched play allows armies to be
tested against each other under
conditions that give no particular
advantage to either side, so you can
see which army is strongest and
which general is canniest. These
styles are fluid and their component
parts can often be used together,
depending on what you are trying
to achieve.
In the matched play section (
pg
68-109
), you will find updated
Pitched Battle and Meeting
Engagement rules, including revised
and rebalanced battleplans, as well as
matched play rules for team gaming.
Also included is a suite of rules for
fighting in different Mortal Realms.
In the accompanying booklet,
Pitched Battle Profiles 2020
, you will
find updated Pitched Battle points
for all available units.
