s we seem to have acquired a great many
new readers and subscribers over the last
couple of months it seems appropriate to
take this opportunity to say hello and welcome.
Now in its 43rd year,
Scale Aircraft Modelling,
and
indeed all the Guideline titles, seem to be
negotiating the current emergency with some
success, thanks partly to the efforts of our
international team of contributors, who have
kept providing high quality modelling and
reference material throughout, and partly to the
team at the Guideline office, who have managed
to ensure every issue has come out on time in
spite of dire forecasts and some of the least
sympathetic trading conditions imaginable.
When I
first
started editing modelling
magazines, back before the Ark,
SAM
was very
much perceived as a ‘historical and reference’
magazine, offering extensive research, and
providing information and assistance for
conversions, scratchbuilds, and inspiration for
projects based on model builds demonstrating
what you, the reader, could do. The Internet has
changed the way magazine content is compiled
and presented, and the days when two leading
titles would compete to see who could cram the
most new product reviews in are very much
behind us. What hasn’t changed here at
SAM
is
our commitment to inspiring and assisting
modellers to achieve the best results, to their
own standards, and by their own methods. There
is no ‘right’ way to build a model, and our
content is edited to reflect this, and to offer
options and alternatives rather than presenting
the work of a master builder and saying ‘this is
what you should do …’
Having returned late to the hobby at a time
when the Czech powerhouse was just getting
started, and there were far fewer options and
much more mess, my own personal preference is
for the kind of scratch-conversion and corrective
surgery showcased in our ‘Workbench’ section.
That said,
SAM
aims to cater for all styles and
tastes, and we are always keen to hear from new
contributors – especially those with something
more to say than ‘here is a plane wot I built …’
I will also take this opportunity to remind all
readers that a subscription to any of Guideline’s
magazines will save you money and ensure you
get your copy promptly and regularly, although
to date there have been no issues getting the
magazines to the shops for their publication
dates. Check out the subscription offers
elsewhere in this issue.
