CHAPTER 1
Welcome to the Zone
Welcome to life after the collapse.
From the ashes of the fall, we struggle to arise.
Violent gangs, raiders, petty warlords and swarming packs of those no longer human, the
world is a perilous place.
However, as you survey the dusty wasteland you feel confident that the flame of humanity will
continue to burn at least a little while longer.
Chapter 1
The game is sub-titled
Chapter 1
as it covers the most conventional campaign style, as your
squad explores the ruined wasteland and tries to establish themselves.
With time, the intention is to expand the game to include two additional regions, though this
will require a lot more testing.
This also means that some rules concepts are explained, which will see limited use in
Chapter
1.
They are included for the benefit of players that would like to use them in scenarios of their
own making.
That being said, every effort has been made to make
Chapter 1
a complete and fun game in
itself.
The structure of the game
Five Klicks
is a solo game, intended for a single player to play against the system.
Two players could easily play together, by simply splitting their squad between them. This is an
excellent way to introduce people to miniatures gaming, as well as being well suited for less
competitive players.
The game is intended to be played as a campaign, where you follow the same squad through
multiple battles.
The campaign has player selected “win” conditions, though you may of course opt to play for
any length of time you like.

Updates
To make sure you are notified of rules updates, please make sure you are set to receive email
notifications from the
Wargame Vault.
If you just purchased the rules, I recommend waiting a week or so before you print them out as
updates, tweaks and corrections always sneak in.
If you spot anything that needs fixing, is worded poorly or just feels like it needs a nudge,

Balance changes
A procedurally generated game can be tricky to balance:
One play through may be far tougher than the next. Tomorrows encounter may be a push-over
with great rewards.
If you find that the campaign structure is too generous, too punishing, a particular enemy is too
brutal (or not nearly strong enough) please contact me with your suggestions and observations.
The intention is for the game to be adjusted over time.
Permissions
You cannot redistribute the rules in any format, however you may create reasonable excerpts
(up to 20% of the text) in order to create play aids for use in a club, store or similar session.
You are welcome to discuss the game and its mechanics in detail on blogs, forums etc.
If you purchased the rules through the
Wargame Vault,
you have permission to print these rules
through a commercial print service for personal use and use with your gaming club.
You may create and distribute play aids, reference sheets etc., provided they do not completely
replace the need for the game rules.

THE WORLD OF FIVE KLICKS
The rules present what is often called an implied setting:
A set of guidelines for how the world functions, suitable for getting the game to work.
Humanity has fallen:
Gangs, war bands and militias squabble over sparse resources in the rubble, environmental
hazards are everywhere and horrors stalk the earth.
Among the disaster-stricken wasteland and toxic ruins civilization struggles to emerge as
cultures scrape out an existence in spite of the world they inhabit.
These new political groups will try to impose their visions of order on the chaos they emerge
from, often at gun point.
Many questions are not answered within these pages, the most notable being what caused the
collapse.
Nuclear warfare? Military biological agents? Nano-machines? Environmental collapse?
The answer is up to you and your collection of miniatures.
Some players will prefer a grittier, more realistic look with lots of contemporary looking army
figures.
Others will want to go all in on colorful raiders and post-apocalyptic weirdness.
The game tries to accommodate each style, but ultimately your choice of figures, paint jobs
and terrain will be the deciding factor.
A note on survival
We have opted to include survival aspects (such as scavenging for food and water) only in very
limited, stylized ways.
While such concerns are often a part of post-apocalyptic survival media, it does not tend to
translate very well to miniatures gaming.
Ultimately, our goal is a setting to have tactical skirmish battles in.
As such, tracking clean water and how many hot dogs are left in the backpack is beyond our
scope. I hope you will understand.
