Ten
consecutive lysergized subjects have
been
studied intensively as to
the
rehtionship between
their afl'ective interplay
with other
persons and the
degree
and quality
of
their
distortion of
these
other
persons.
Forty-four
clear
incidents
of distortion of others occurred
in a total
of
a33 important
rehtion-
ships, hence a
distortion
of _9 per cent of the
relationships.
In 37
of
these 44
inddeats (80 per cent) the subject's attitude was classified as strongly affec-
tire. In ,8 incidents (39 per cent) it was
of
essentially positive affiliative
quality,
bilaterally oriented
in
goal.
In
'9 incidents
(4'
per cent) it was
essentially
hostile
and self-oriented. A
greater
proportion
of
the strongly
affective
relationships of
al_liative
or
hostile nature were
distorted
than were
rehtionships
of other
quality:
Afliliative
or Hostile
Interplay:
26 per cent
distorted
Impersonal,
Empathetic
and Nurturant:
6 per cent
distorted
It appears that the
distortions
in interplay
occurred
primarily where the
interphy was
of
the
demanding or
threatening nature so
often called
for in
affiliative and hostile attitudes. Twenty-two per cent
of
the incidents
of
aftiliative interplay were
distorted
compared with 3a per cent
of
the incidents
of
hostile interplay. At this time
one
might say that qu_fitatively
hostile
attitudes
of
the subject contributed
only
32 per cent moi'd
fo
the
subject's
unreal appraisal
of others
than
did
at_liative attitudes.
However,
a qualitative
comparison
of
the incidents
of distortion
in hostile and affiliative interplay
adds more to
our
knowledge
of
the real meaning to the subject
of
his hostility
and his affiliation than
does
this quantitative comparison.
When
the subject's
interplay attitude was affiliative, he tended to perceive
the object
in an
over-
valuating manner;
for example: "big, my very rock of Gibraltar," soft and
warm,
or glowing
with youth and health.
When
the subject's attitude was
hostile he tended to
devaluate
the
object:
a
diabolical
face, a flattened face, a
young
woman looking
loo years
old. In
essence, thoughts and feelings about
other
persons and
objects gained reality through
visual
distortion.
