Ostfront – Soviet Army
The Soviet Union in World War II
The Soviet Union was a totalitarian state that traces its roots to the revolutions in Russia during 1917, near the end of
the First World War. The communist Bolsheviks took the country over and installed their new Soviet form of
government, killing the Tsar and his family. Before the civil war even ended, the Soviets invaded Poland but were
beaten back; they also failed to take Finland, Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia. But the Baltic States would eventually be
annexed and the Soviets signed a deal with Germany. On the first of September, 1939, the Germans attacked Poland
and the Soviets followed up on the 17th to try and secure the territories they wanted in the Ribbentrop-Molotov treaty.
While the Germans turned their attention westward, Stalin was preparing to betray Hitler but was pre-empted by
Operation Barbarossa. And so the Second World War, or The Great Patriotic War as they called it, came to Russia.
The Soviet army was weakened due to political struggle and purges which resulted in a lack of experienced professional
soldiers. Special units were formed to prevent other units from retreating by shooting them should they try.
The Soviets caught a second wind once the infamous Russian winter bogged the Wehrmacht down and eventually the
offensive ended up grinding to a halt. They also learned valuable tactics from their invaders, which they put to great
use in their offensives to encircle the German 6
th
Army near Stalingrad, and eventually drive the Wehrmacht from
Russia.
Interestingly enough, even with the purges, the Soviets managed to develop some innovations in their vehicle designs
and caught the Wehrmacht by surprise.
Ultimately, Russia's most valuable resource – manpower, was to be fully brought to bear against the invading German
forces, and with Hitler's micromanagement and refusal to endorse strategically sound plans, the German army became
cut off and after attempting to capture the city of Stalingrad. This was hailed as the turning point, and Soviet forces
fought a long a bloody campaign to force the Wehrmacht out of Russia, advancing all the way to Berlin and carving
out a huge part of Europe to be subjugated under Sovier Rule. Almost as soon as the war ended, a rift between old
allies emerged and a new war began - The Cold War.
About This Book
This is the Soviet Army List for Ostfront. Aside from flavour text, you will find unit sheets and reference sheets that
will enable you to create army lists for the approppriate periods for your battles. The unit sheets contain all the
necessary information about the unit as well as any special rules, while the Quick Reference Sheets provide a condensed
write-up of unit attributes and a few handy tables. The whole book considers ease of printing so that you can use
exactly the parts you need.

If a Regular Infantry Platoon take 50% casualties, roll a D6. Regular Infantry are pinned if the result is 2 or less:
They cannot move or fire next turn. Place a yellow marker.
Platoons
Regular Infantry are deployed in
platoons.
A platoon is two bases of Regular Infantry that must be initially deployed
within 1” of each other. After deployment, each base can act separately, and does not need to stay within 1”. The two
bases together cost 10 points. At the end of a battle, each individual base is worth 5 points.
Transport
Regular Infantry can take a turn to embark a vehicle within 6”. Once embarked, they move at the same speed as the
vehicle they are embarked in, and can disembark provided the vehicle didn't move Flat Out that turn. Disembarking
infantry count as moving 3” for the purposes of shooting on the turn they disembark.
Going to Ground
If Regular Infantry haven’t moved during their turn, they’ve Gone to Ground and take -1 damage when fired upon.

brave comrades form the backbone of any military operation, fighting against those who would threaten Mother
Russia.
