he past year or so has
been strange from
various standpoints,
but one hobby-related
aspect that caught my attention
recently was how people have
become used to using mail order
for their kits and materials (and
I’m probably as guilty of this as
anyone). Like many, though, some
of my fondest memories are of
popping to the nearest model
shop when I was younger and
arguably my passion for the hobby
was nurtured by the thrill of seeing
the latest kits (although most were
out of my reach financially back
then). Now that ‘bricks and mortar’
shops have reopened, I’ve made
a conscious effort to either visit
my local retailers or buy direct
from traders at model shows. After
all, without them, we lose one of
the key enticements for those
new to the hobby: that ability to
browse through the stock, which
is impossible with online sources.
We’re delighted this month
to feature an exclusive build of
Airfix’s re-worked 1/72 Wellington
as a Merlin-powered Mk.II and this
is accompanied by an in-depth
history of the type. The question
of whether we’re in a modelling
‘golden age’ is often raised
and given the recent bounty of
imminent new toolings (see
News
for details) I’d agree with that
sentiment. ICM’s gorgeous 1/32
CR.42 Falco makes a welcome
appearance and it’s joined by
reissues of Aoshima’s 1/24 MGB
sports car, a J 35 Viggen from
Hasegawa and Kinetic’s ever-
popular quarter-scale EA-6B
Prowler. There’s also the first
in what we intend to be an
occasional series on ‘kit-bashing’,
which shows how to build
Canada’s latest MTVL armoured
personnel carrier from two 1/72
M113s and a host of spares, while
Accurate Armour’s delightful 1/35
Spartan CVR(T) gets a rather
unusual adornment.
