This compact, well-illustrated guide to making
model soldiers offers the beginner all the basic
information he needs to get started in this
absorbing craft, and shows the more
experienced modeller how he can give his
military miniatures the expert touch.
After a brief chapter putting today’s
enormous interest in military modelling into
historical perspective, the emphasis of the book
shifts to the entirely practical.
First come helpful tips on modelling
equipment and assembly. Then the
fundamentals: animation and conversion,
casting one’s own figures, and painting. The
problems (and virtues) of metal, plastic and
mixed-medium figures are explained, and the
section on painting - which deals with matt
enamels, acrylics and oil paints - contains some
of the most informative writing ever on the
subject. Step-by-step photographs and text
detailing many of the techniques involved offer
close-up insights into how top-flight modellers
like Roy Dilley, Graham Bickerton and Edward
Suren work. Equally important sections deal
with the display, care and storage of miniatures,
including a particularly useful step-by-step
rundown on the making of a diorama. And the
book ends with a detailed chapter on research
and a list of manufacturers.
