was recently chatting to an old modelling
friend, and well, we go way back to when
Airfix glue came in small tubes that you had
to break the end off before using, and the
instructions said ‘locate and cement’ on various
parts! We got to talking about hobby shops, and
that when we were younger there were at least
eight or nine we could get to without much effort,
and even our local hardware store sold Airfix and
Revell kits. Perhaps our favourite place though
was a hobby shop in our local town, that not only
sold plastic models, but also flying scale balsa
wood kits, as well as radio-controlled stuff, ships,
books, magazines and all the ephemera that
any modeller could want. I can still remember
the heady smell of modelling products that
permeated the air when you walked in and the
huge models that hung from the ceiling, and a
wall filled with Airfix, Revell, and Tamiya model
kits, either in boxes, or in those plastic bags that
held the early Airfix offerings. The shop was
always packed on a Saturday, and behind the
counter were a number of enthusiastic staff,
who all wore jackets and ties and were always
eager to advise and offer help. I must admit that
I did succumb to the odd balsa wood model, and
in particular I can recall a P-51 Mustang with a
rubber band style ‘engine’ and a Supermarine
Swift which housed a solid fuel ‘Jetex’ engine, that
I could never get to work! Over the years since,
many such establishments have gone, although
you can still see a number of such emporiums
dotted around the country, and my plea would be
to support them as much as you can. Of course,
and as I have mentioned in previous editorial
thoughts, the Covid pandemic has seen an
explosion in our hobby, and mail order modelling
has never had it so good, which is a real boost,
and locally to me has had an unexpected benefit!
In a nearby town, we have a gift and general
toyshop, and a couple of weeks ago I needed to
get a birthday present for one of our brood, so I
dropped in only to find a selection of Airfix kits
on offer. I asked the owner about the display and
he told me that a number of folks had been in
asking where they could buy plastic model kits,
so he decided to stock a few, and apparently,
they have been quite popular! So, you just never
know! Back to this issue, and we welcome back
master modeller Jay Blakemore with his superb
Tempest build, and SAMI regular Steven J DeNucci
brings not one but two excellent builds of a 1/72
Hasegawa Starfighter and a 1/72 VP Canada
Vacform kit of a Douglas XB-43. Also, this month
we take another look at the 1/48 Kinetic Harrier
GR.3 via the capable hands of Vini Pompeo, and
another regular Andy McCabe brings us a ‘Tale
from Iwo Jima’ with the 1/48 Eduard P-51D Very
Long-Range Mustang. So, as always, we have
plenty to inform and inspire, and to that end, all
that remains for me to say is….
