ave you got a stash of kits that you
never thought you would build, well,
good news you may be glad that you
have them over the next few months!
Over the last year, many have discovered
or rediscovered the simple pleasure to be
had in sticking bits of plastic together to
produce a miniature representation of their
favourite aircraft, ship or perhaps tank!
Anyone who buys a specialist modelling
magazine will already be aware of how
immersive our hobby can be. I am sure I am
not the only one who goes into their modelling
space for a quick ten minutes of modelling
enjoyment only to emerge a couple of hours
later wondering how that much time has
passed, much to the amusement of my wife.
But this discovery of our hobby has a cost, sales
are booming around the world and in the UK the
demand for plastic kits and modelling tools and
equipment has not been this high since the last
century, and that statement really makes me feel old!
In fact, there is a danger that retailers both
online and on the high street will find it hard to
obtain kits, as many importers and distributors
are struggling to meet the demand for
everything from basic starter kits to advanced
models for the more experienced builders.
As I write this, they have just managed to free a
container ship that blocked the Suez Canal for just
one week. This led to major delays to hundreds of
bulk cargo carriers. The effects of this seemingly
small incident will have ramifications on worldwide
trade for months to come according to the experts.
This has highlighted how much we now rely on
these worldwide superhighways for so many
products and how vulnerable they are to disruption
and we already know that several manufacturers
have already had delays, adding months to the
release of long-awaited new tool kits purely because
they cannot get container space to put them in.
This is not the only event that may have an
affect on our hobby, a small fire in the Czech
Republic earlier this year, wiped out large amounts
of stored plastic kits from Eduard and though
production was not affected, that loss has had
an impact on their release program as well as
the stock of older kits to pass on to distributors.
In the United States, one of the largest Hobby
Companies and retailer, Squadron Signal of Texas
under whose ownership many famous brands
have fallen over the last 20 years ceased trading
and this loss will be felt by many modellers for
years to come, as everything from kits to decals
to reference books will become hard to find.
Also, dare I mention Brexit, whose effect
on the supply of modelling products from
Europe has not really been felt yet in the UK
but as shops reopen and demand for modelling
products increases may well also have an
impact on your future modelling projects.
So thank God for the stash, which until now has
mainly been used as an insulation material for the
loft, but may now actually become a source of
inspiration as you unearth that kit at the back of the
pile, that you had forgotten you had purchased a
few years ago. It may now be your best candidate
for a gold winning entry in the competition at Scale
ModelWorld Telford in the Autumn. (We hope!)
