Composite Wood
(Modeling on the Cheap)

Ok we all know what papier-mache is, right? Strips of newspaper, magazine pages, etc; all laminated
together with some type of glue; whether that be the traditional flour and water, or commercially
available white glue...or even resins. As we are all familiar with that I won't really elaborate upon it.
We can apply these same principles to other materials...on the high end is curved and laminated wood,
plywood, and even, in a way, composite wood, particle board, etc.; Laminated fiberglass is another.
The basics being to build up a shape, one layer at a time, with various materials bonded together.
Going beyond basic papier-mache, we could use cardboard, wood strips, sawdust, scrap cloth.
When using any paper or wood product in these fashions, we are, essentially, creating “composite
wood”. Many wood workers make their own wood putty by mixing available sawdust with glue.
Now we all have this kind of stuff, laying around, awaiting the trash man or recycler... let's put it to our
own use...
Here, I've taken a scrap of cardboard box, dampened it, and clamped it around some shapes to give it a
curve, next to it is a piece made from 2 pieces, glued together and formed in a similar manner.
So what do you think happens when we remove it from the mold? And how long will it maintain that
shape, is it strong enough for our crafting purposes? As you can see, laminated is the way to go.
Here I've taken and added 2 more layers to the glued version...it is now as strong as a comparable
thickness of wood.
Using this idea and adding on...
I trace out a lozenge/leaf shape on a piece of cardboard tube, cut it out and glue it to another tube.
When dry, I mix a little water based wood putty with a small amount of water to give me something
like a thick paint. I paint that on my cut out, and when dry, cut out (carefully) the entire shape. The
inside could then be “painted” with putty too, or more laminations could be added as well.
I can't tell you how many times I almost ate this “Fake Pringles Crisp” LOL
Looks to make a nice flower petal. This is fairly strong for it's thickness.
How about this...
Wrap a piece of glue covered cardboard, or paper towel around a dowel (making sure not to glue it to
the dowel). Or glue and just roll it up really tight and secure it to dry.
This is starting to look familiar...with a little wood putty, and sanding you'll have a nice hollow tube as
strong as a dowel rod
