Crafting the Ur-uatchi Scepter

The cover shows a design of the Ur-uatchi, based on the design of Steffi Grant. This is a fairly
elaborate; but lets try some simpler variations. In time you will develop the skills to craft more
elaborate versions.
This shows about the simplest version that one could make.
I say about the simplest, because one could cut the serpents from thin flat stock, rather than having 3D
looking ones.
Here's a slightly more elaborate version, about �½ way between the two presented above.
We will be using thin (3/16”) luan plywood, (3) 3” wood disks, a napkin ring, (2) toy wooden cobras,
and the standard glue and wood putty, A few pieces of scrap will be used to make sure everything is
solid. and a section of 1” dowel. (length will depend on the other scepters/wands used in the ritual.
They should all be about the same final length.
Cut a 2 pieces of luan about 13” x 3-1/2”, and join to make a thicker piece; allow for making a
mounting tang at the bottom center cut out a wing, round the corners, mark and cut out the top central
in-cut.
Cut another piece of luan about 11” x 2”, round the corners and make the central in-cut.
Take a 4

piece, 13” x 1” and cut the shape of the spike feather, round out some corners, try to get all
the in-cuts matched up as best you can.
Now take the 2 snakes, cut of the un-needed tail sections. Where we want a tighter turn in the snake
body, we need to cut the gaps wider on the inside of the curve.
Some of these have a spring in the neck, which sometimes can be removed with some small needle-
nose pliers, getting it out makes the work a little easier, but don't worry if you can't remove it.
Next put a copious amount of glue in the gaps of the inside curves and clamp, secure the shape needed.
Let this dry thoroughly.
Glue up the various wing layers and let them dry, glue up 2 of the disks and mark the third just to get a
small piece to fit the step between th wing layers. Lay the double disk on the wings and mark the part
of the spike feather to remove, to allow the disk to lay flat. Glue the disk piece to the double disk and
glue in place.
Clamp together and allow to dry. Take some scrap pieces or parts of a dowel, as I have to make pieces
to fit the tang to make it secure in the napkin ring. Don't make these go any further than �½” into ring,
we need space for the staff.
Fill in all gaps on the snakes with wood putty, smooth out and sand. Attach the Ring, and determine the
placement of the serpents. I drill a hole into the bottom end and a matching one in the ring to allow a
round toothpich to act as a dowel. (make sure any of the toothpick is removed from inside the ring so as
to not interfere with the staff. Another toothpick is used to mount the cobra's hoo to the wing, again
with matching holes. Test fit until you have it as you want it; then glue in place, and allow all to dry.
Using wood putty, fill in the gaps under the spike wings (scrap wood could be used, too) using several
fills. Fill in the gaps at the serpents bases. Once dry, do any final sanding, and priming.
Paint according to your tradition.
