A quarter view of the
Yamato
running her trials in the Inland Sea, dated 30 October
1941. A unique feature of this class was the shape of the hull abreast No 3 turret,
flared out to form a ‘hangar’ that protected the larger ship’s boats from gun blast;
the shadow of its ‘entrance’ and of the quarterdeck overhang makes it very evident
in this photo. Boatswere handled by an overhead travelling crane, and the ship
could stow sixteen (although the normal complement was two less).
