t’s a real treat for me to be able to bring you
another stunning piece of cover artwork from
Christian Zambruno this month, featuring
an F/A-18D ATARS ‘Recce Stinger’ Hornet,
which is then reflected in scale with a superb
build of the 1/48 Kinetic kit from Vini Pompeo.
It’s also hard to believe that the US Marine Corps
F/A-18s have recently conducted their final
carrier-based flight, when Hornets from VMA-323
‘Death Rattlers’ launched from the USS Nimitz
for the last time. The jet entered operational
service with the Marines with Marine Corps
squadron VMFA-314 at Marine Corps Air Station
El Toro, California in early 1983, replacing the F-4
Phantom. The aircraft entered combat for the
first time in 1986, used to suppress air defence
systems in Libya and took part in both Gulf Wars,
in Bosnia and latterly over Afghanistan, and is
now being replaced with the F-35B Lighting. The
F/A-18D build and the artwork also reminded
me of a once in a lifetime visit to MCAS Beaufort
back in the 1990s and the opportunity to take
some images of the Hornet from the ramp of a
KC-130 tanker. The Beaufort guys were amazing
and more than accommodating, and to walk
along the ramp and see all those ‘Stingers’
was certainly a sight to behold! Happy Days!
And speaking of happy days….perhaps we
can start look forward now to better times on
the horizon. You will no doubt see in this issue
the return of our ‘Show Diary’, which has been
tucked away in David Francis’ drawer for the past
eight months or so! Hopefully we are seeing the
first glimpses of a return to some kind of normal
activity in the second half of the year, although
we cannot yet be sure what format shows may
take. Will face coverings be needed? Will there
be a limited number of people allowed in venues
at any one time? Will hospitality be open for
that all important morning breakfast sandwich
and coffee? But I am sure that coming out from
our ‘man caves’ back into the ‘modelling world
at large’ will be a tonic for us all, and let’s not
forget there is nothing quite like wandering
around a show and spotting a bargain in those
boxes at the front of club stands or indeed having
a delve into a trader’s stock and discovering a
kit you have always wanted, but never thought
you’d to be able to find! So, let’s stay positive
and look forward to better times ahead. So,
once again this month we have an issue packed
with news, reviews and builds which I hope you
enjoy, so on behalf of David, Tim and myself…..
