Foreword
The primary
aim
of
the
International
M
aritime
Solid
Bulk
Cargoes
(IM
SBC)
Code,
w
hich
replaces the Code
of Safe Practice
for Solid
Bulk
Cargoes (BC
Code),
is
to
facilitate
the
safe
stowage
and
shipment of solid
bulk cargoes by providing
information
on
the dangers
associated w
ith the
shipment of
certain
types of
solid bulk
cargoes and
instructions
on
the
pro
cedur es to
be
adopted
w
hen
the shipment of solid
bulk
cargoes
is contemplated.
The IM
SBC Code,
adopted
on 4
December
2008
by resolution
MSC.268(85),
may
be
applied from
1 January
2009 on a voluntary
basis,
anticipating
its
envisaged officia
l
entry
into
force
on
1
January
20
11,
from w
hich
date
it
w
ill be
mandatory
under
the
provision
of
the
SO
LAS
Convention.
In
order to
keep pace wi
th
the expansion and progress of industry,
in recent
years, the BC Code
underwent
many changes,
in
bo
th
layout and content, befo
re
being superseded by
the
IM
SBC Code.
The
new Code includes:
• Fully
updated
individual
schedules
for
solid bulk cargoes
New
individual
schedules for such cargoes as
direct
reduced iron
fines,
chopped
rubber
and
plastic
insulation
and
granulated
tyre
rubber
• New
provisions
about
an
alternative
form
of
sulphur
• References to
the text
of
SO
LAS
1974
as
it
has
most
recently been
amended

pdated
inform
ation
from
the
2008
edition
of
the
IMDG
Code
This
pub
lication
presents
addit
ional inform
ation
to
supplement
the IM
SBC Code,
such
as
the
Code
of
Practice for the
Safe
Loading
and
Unloading of
Bulk Carriers (BLU Code) and
Recomm
endations
on
the
safe
use of pesticides
in
ships applicable
to the
fum
igation
of cargo
holds. It
also
includ
es a
directory of
co
ntact
names
and addresses of offices of
designated
national
com
petent authorities
responsible for the
safe carriage of grain and solid bulk
cargoes.

commended
to
Administrations, shipowners, shippers and
masters
and all oth
ers
concerned wi
th
the
standards
to be
applied
in
the safe stowage and shipment of solid bulk cargoes, excluding grain.
