The 'Century of the Soldier' series covers the period of military history
c. 1618-1721, the 'golden era' of Pike and Shot warfare. This time frame
has been seen by many historians as a period of not only great social
change, but of fundamental developments within military matters.
This is the period of the 'military revolution: the development of standing
armies, the widespread introduction of black powder weapons and a
greater professionalism within the culture of military personnel.

The series examines the period in a greater degree of detail than has hitherto been attempted, and has
a very wide brief, with the intention of covering all aspects of the period from the battles, campaigns,
logistics and tactics, to the personalities, armies, uniforms and equipment.
About the author:
Dr Oates
has been interested in the Jacobite period since his schooldays in the 1980s. His undergraduate
dissertation and doctorate (Reading University, 1991 and 2001) focused on the impact of the Jacobite threat
in the north east of England in 1715 and 1745. He has had 31 books published, five of them on aspects of
the Jacobite campaigns from 1715-1746, including studies of the battles of Sheriffmuir and Preston. He is
currently working on a book about the battles of the entire campaigns, 1689-1746, a biography of General
Hawley and is co-editing a volume of the Duke of Cumberland's correspondence from 1745-1748. He is
employed as an archivist in London and regularly gives talks on family, local and criminal history. He lives
with his wife and son in Buckinghamshire, and regularly visits Scotland for research and social purposes.
About the artist:
An industry professional in publishing and book sales, Mark
Allen
has worked for WH Smith, PSL, Blandford
Press and Cassell, before becoming Sales Director at Photobook Information Services which seemed to involve
playing lots of cricket for West Malvern and not a lot else. Since 1991 Mark has spent most of his time painting
model soldiers for a living, with a brief return, to a proper job, with Waterstone's.
