e all know that sense of
achievement when we finish a
model, but what happens to the
subject of all that hard work?
I tend to keep my models on display in my
workshop for about a year, occasionally taking
them to display on my clubs stand at Model
Shows (remember them?). Eventually they
will work their way onto the ‘shelf of doom’
and from there into the rubbish for disposal.
However, one of my friends has nearly every
model he has ever built neatly catalogued
and stored in his loft for display at an
underdetermined point in the future, while
another, who produces some very high-quality
dioramas and models, some of which have graced
the pages of this magazine, has built up quite a
profitable side-line by selling them on auction
sites. He usually obtains enough to pay for the
kit, plus all the materials and aftermarket sets
he has used, normally with a small profit on top.
Yet another makes the most of his limited
display space by building his models in
two separate halves, normally with each
half in different markings. He then mounts
each half on a picture frame, and now
has quite an impressive wall display.
Finally, there is the old school approach,
as seen in my local model shop Hannants in
Colindale. A few months ago, they started taking
some of their regular customers models and
hanging them from the ceiling using strong
fishing line. This is something I have not seen
done for many years, but it did bring back
fond memories of my youth visiting a number
of North London hobby shops when I started
seeking out kits from Hasegawa, Tamiya and
Monogram not stocked by my local Woolworths.
So, it made me wonder how do you display
