MUST
GO ON
F
or most of this year we have lived
in very challenging times and many
have found modelling a way of
escaping the real world for a few
hours. I know that personally I have really
valued the few hours I managed to get at
the workbench each week as a great way of
relaxing, even though the summer months
are a time when traditionally most modellers
take a spell away from their projects.
As I write this, we are in the third week
of July and I am about to take a bit of an
enforced break. As many know I have been
working very hard of the last six months in
a number of different roles and so I should
have been for the next fortnight as I was
due to be attending the US Nationals in San
Marcos, hard at work selling the magazines
and talking to the public and traders from
around the world. (Yes, dear it is work not
just talking models honestly). Unfortunately,
the US Nationals were cancelled last month
(though San Marcos have now been given
the 2023 Nationals) so spending a couple
of days exploring Texas and seeing the sea
of Mexico for the first time is not going to
happen. Instead for the first time in over
10 years I will be spending my summer
break with my wife on the Suffolk coast
for a few days and exploring the local
attractions of a staycation here in the UK.
Sadly, this is the fifth major model
show I will have missed this year and
also coincidently the fifth of my monthly
IPMS Milton Keynes club night meetings
I have also missed this year. One of the
side effects of all this is just how much I
spend my whole year planning my holidays
and rotas in my other jobs around Model
Shows and club nights, and how much my
modelling time increased as I tried (and
normally failed) to have something new to
put on the table at shows or at club night.
Until now I had just taken these events
for granted and I did not realize how much I
would also miss the social interaction with
fellow modellers. Because, though I can
talk modelling to my wife and daughter, I
can also see the glazing over of the eyes
when I do! Many clubs including IPMS
Milton Keynes have been organising online
meetings and there have been a number of
online model shows but to be honest these
technology replacements leave me cold.
But now the green shoots of a new
normal may be appearing though it is
very early days, but we are discussing
holding club meetings again in the autumn.
Even in the US where the virus is still
running rampant there is still hope for
the future as the organisers of next years
US Nationals in Las Vegas have sold over
1600 rooms at the large hotel complex
hosting the event and have had to reserve
another 400 rooms due to the demand.
So though for many social distancing
and wearing masks is not easy it will not
be for ever and hopefully very soon we will
be in a new world when we can meet, chat
and talk modelling to our hearts content.

the modelling bench and look forward
to sharing your work at a model show
