You can’t go wrong wargaming with a bunch of mohawk sporting US paratroopers known
as the ‘Filthy 13’ or indeed a group of armed British citizen militia known as ‘Dad’s Army’,
both (very different!) sets of warriors featured in this month’s ‘Infamous Sections’ theme,
along with Popski’s Private Army - a rag-tag collection of heroic individuals who fought
their way across North Africa and into Italy during World War Two.

The very talented Mr Jack Alexander celebrated
his 90th birthday in August 2019. As many of you
will know he is the gentleman responsible for the
small range of beautifully proportioned 20mm
metal figures and equipment kits known under the
name Jacklex. In wargame parlance these are ‘old
school’ figures first sculpted and produced by Jack
and first sold through the Garrison model soldier
shop in Harrow in the summer of 1968. By happy
coincidence, 2019 was also the year that saw the re-
launch of ‘Jacklex Miniatures’ to keep alive a little piece of vintage wargame history.
Quite where Jack Alexander acquired his skill in creating the lovely little pieces is
open to conjecture. It may have been his work as an instrument maker for Boosey and
Hawkes or his collaboration with Bill Pearce of the Garrison shop or his later work
for Miltra making 1/72nd scale Second World War figures. It seems more likely that
it is simply innate, a fact confirmed, as any of you who follow Alan Cook’s excellent
‘All Thing’s Jacklex’ blog will have seen, by Jack’s ability to build, sculpt, create and
mould with consummate ease anything from tiny military men to architectural models
and large scale naval vessels.
The American Civil War and colonial ranges continue to be the best sellers from the
five very varied periods created by Jack Alexander. The most unusual being the Russo-
Japanese War range and the most recent the US Punitive Expedition to Mexico figures.
The latter were brought to market by Peter Johnstone of ‘Spencer Smith Miniatures’
who has done much over the course of the last eighteen years to keep the Jacklex
ranges viable.
Jack Alexander and the new owner of ‘Jacklex Miniatures’, Mark Lodge met for the
first time in July. What has followed, with Jack’s blessing and the kind assistance of
Bob Black and Alan Cook is the piecing together of missing moulds, the discovery of
many of the original sculpts including exquisite equipment pieces and the creation of
new figures. This work has enabled ‘Jacklex Miniatures’ to offer the most extensive
range of Jack Alexander’s figures yet seen. There are also plans to extend the existing
ranges and add a completely new range to cover the French Intervention to Mexico
whilst still keeping to the same selection of poses and traditional ‘toy soldier’ look of
Jack Alexander’s figures.
Jack Alexander continues to wargame with friends using miniature Jacklex armies.
Long may he continue to do so and long may his charming and evocative figures be
available to all us wargamers.

Ragnarok: The Vanir

The Aesir are dead, and the Vanir, now uncontested in their divinity,
come to claim what is left of the Nine Realms. The War Clans must
oppose, or align with, these new foes.
Ragnarok: The Vanir
features new Godsparks that War Clans may
harness to combat the marauding Vanir, as well as new scenarios,
monsters, and options to further develop players’ campaigns.
COMMEMORATING
THE HEROIC WORCESTERS
Warlord Games have teamed up with the Worcestershire Ambassadors and
the Mercian Regiment Museum to help commemorate the gallant and pivotal
action that saw the Worcestershire Regiment save the line at Gheluvelt,
Ypres, Belgium, 31 October 1914.
Strong German infantry attacks had driven in the British line and all
that was left to counter-attack were 357 officers and men of the second
battalion Worcesters.
Dropping packs and fixing bayonets the three companies formed line and
dashed forward under heavy aimed shrapnel fire. They lost one hundred men
before closing in and routing a whole regiment of Germans who thought
they had won the battle.
It was a stunning if expensive victory. Of the 357 men who went forward,
no less than 198 were killed or wounded.... But the line was held, the
gallant Worcesters were true to their cap badge motto, “Firm”.
Lord French said that day to Lord Selborne “The Worcesters saved
the Empire”.
A splendid booklet has been written about the action and Warlord MD John
Stallard commissioned a maquette from top sculptor Bob Naismith. John is
a Worcester lad and saw his chance to help the charity. So here he is, in all
his glory, if you wish to get your hands on the model and leaflet see
the Warlord website. All profits go to the memorial restorations and
educating Worcester children the sacrifices made in WWI.
