ighty years ago, this month, the skies over
Britain darkened as the Luftwa e began its
assault on Britain. They had cut their teeth
in the Spanish Civil War, and participated in the
lightning German invasions of Poland, Belgium,
Norway and France, and German forces seemed
unstoppable. Now they came, with their Italian
allies, as a prelude to the invasion of Britain…

They were met by brave men (and women) of
the RAF, by Polish and Czech Pilots, By Canadians
and Australians, by New Zelanders, Irish,
Belgains, South Africans, French, Rhodesians,
Jamaicans, Barbadoans, American Volunteers
and more. 1495 of them would give their lives,
449 of them
fighter
pilots, but their sacrifice
would eventually mean that Britain would never
face a seaborn invasion by the Axis, and we
remain eternally grateful for their sacrifices and
service.
From a modelling point of view, the Battle
represents a snapshot of some of the most
famous types used un anger in WW2, and in this
special issue, we have tried to celebrate and
commemorate the types, and the history they
represent. Regrettably, we were unable to theme

hope readers will forgive the fact it does not
match the theme. Also this month, the regular
Aircraft in Profile has been replaced as I could
not think of anything especially meaningful that
I could add to the extensive literature on the
battle. In lieu of that we give you ten full pages
of Battle of Britain related profiles.
I will soon be introducing a new feature with
Paul Lucas, in addition to Colour Condundrum,
to be called Colour Clinic. This is a chance for
readers to ask Paul for specific advice on a type
or scheme they would like to know more about.
So please so write in to me, so I can pass them
on to Paul.
I hope readers enjoy this special issue.
