paceflight has always
been a source of
fascination for me.
Although I was too young
to remember the Apollo missions,
I was enthralled by the Space
Shuttle programme, watching the
first launch live on TV at school.
This interest has stayed with
me in my model-making, with
several early attempts at various
Airfix and evell offerings. So for
me, this year s 50th anniversary
of the Apollo Moon landings
was the obvious inspiration for
an
AMW
Scale Modelling special.
It came as something of a
surprise that there are relatively
few mainstream products
available, but this is more than
compensated for by specialist
manufacturers, with most (if not
all) launch vehicles replicated.
The projects presented here
cover the majority of the
space era , from the United
States first successful satellite,
Explorer-1,
through Skylab and the
International Space Station (ISS)
to NASA s future Space Launch
System SLS . There s also an
exclusive build of A K Models
newly tooled 1/144 Buran orbiter.
But that s not all, as there s
China s Shen hou and Tiangong
spacecraft, the European Ariane
rocket and even a retro look at
an early design for interplanetary
exploration. t s great to see
such subjects find their way
into styrene or resin form.

As ever, we have attempted to
cover most skill levels, with a mix
of basic and advanced techniques.
On several projects, simple
scratch-building efforts were
essential to correct or augment
the basic builds and ensure more
accuracy. We re also privileged
to have received support from
ex-NASA scientist David Baker,
who has provided absorbing
accounts of the near-disastrous
Skylab launch, the ongoing ISS
project and an examination
of the forthcoming SLS.
It was also rather poignant
to hear that Maj Gen Michael
Collins (the
Apollo 11
Command
Module astronaut) was recently
awarded the National Aeronautic
Association 2019 Wright
Brothers Memorial Trophy
for “his lifelong dedication to
aerospace and public service.”
eaders may be unaware that
the former astronaut has headed
the Smithsonian s National
Air and Space Museum since
1976. Without pioneers such
as him to act as inspiration,
this special wouldn t exist.
