EXERCISE 6 – Different Means of Transportation and Cost Evaluation
Please change the previous model such that: a conveyor belt will transport Bearing A,
Bearing B and Shaft C to the IN Pallet Assembly and a gantry crane will move the grouped
Entities to and from the Hardening Station.
Modelling Instructions:
1. Location – Create a
conveyor
belt
to the
IN Pallet Assembly
with a maximum
capacity of 10 Entities, a transportation speed of 6 km/h which does not allow for
accumulation (Edit the conveyor by double-clicking on its representation in the
Layout)
2. Path Networks – Add a new transportation path
Gantry Crane
(change Type to
Crane),
place additional 3 Nodes at the Input Buffer, Hardening Station and Output
Buffer) and assign the
Interfaces
from the created Nodes to the Locations

3. Resources – Define the
Crane
resource assuming a Pick-up Time of 30s and a Deposit
Time of 25s
4. Variables (global) – Create a work in progress (WIP) counter with a graphical
representation on the Layout
5. Processing
a. Bearing A, Bearing B and Shaft C will enter the System at the Conveyor
Location
b. Adapt the Move Logic at the required locations to include the Gantry Crane
c. To update the
WIP
counter use the Logic Builder commands: Increase (INC
variable, by specific amount)
and Decrease (DEC
variable, by specific amount)
at the Input and Output respectively
6. Cost – Arbitrarily define the Operation Rate for all machine Locations, the Regular
Rate for each Resource and the Initial Cost for the Entities (Enable “Cost” in the
Simulation Options)
7. Arrivals – Bearing A, Bearing B and Shaft C arrive each with a Quantity of one at the
Conveyor
(optimize the arrival parameters such that the maximum content on the
IN
Pallet Assembly
is less than 40, and the total production time is minimum)
