nce a year my wife and I
will try and get a couple
of days away from it all
by taking a break somewhere
in the country we have never
been to before. This year we
headed North o the capital city
of Scotland, Edinburgh. To
say I have fallen in love with
this city on our short break is
a bit of an understatement. We
were fortunate as we had a nice
weekend despite the forecast
of heavy rain so did all the
normal tourist things like the
Castle and Zoo plus a visit to
the Royal Yacht Britannia just
a short bus ride away in Leith.
But one the other features of
our trips away is my hunt for local
model shops, but in recent years
this has become a bit of a task as
model shops have closed across
the land, sadly not due to a decline
in modellers wanting to buy
models and all the bits and pieces
necessary to build them. But just
like many major retail chains in
the UK the growth of the internet
has changed the way we purchase
goods and most of the surviving
model shops have to be multi
channel outlets that also have
web sites as well as a conventional
brick and mortar outlet to survive.
One of the most successful
of these companies who will be
familiar to many is Wonderland
Models. They are well known for
their large yellow tent at Scale
Modelworld in Telford as well as
a web site where you can buy a
comprehensive range of products
from all the major and some not
so major model companies.
But what I had not realised
that Wonderland Models also
have a very large retail outlet
in the heart of the Scottish
capital. Inside you will ind a
treasure trove of plastic kits
and a selection of paint ranges.
They also stock other useful
items like a large selection of

plastic rod and shapes of various
sizes, something I always
struggle to ind locally to me.
At Telford, Wonderland is well
known for its special ofers and
the shop also had a few really
good ones that if I had not been
limited by the size of my suitcase
(Or wife) I would certainly
have taken advantage of.
It was very pleasing to visit
a bricks and mortar model
shop that is thriving and I do
wish I had such a wonderful
model shop local to me, I hope
Edinburgh residents realise
how fortunate they are.
So If you are visiting
Scotland’s capital (something I
would also highly recommend)
try and set aside a little time to
also visit Wonderland Models I am
sure you will not be disappointed.
Now where will my
next trip take me? And will
there be a model shop?
