BIGGER THAN EVER,
TWICE AS NICE
That may sound a strange introduction
when the model to which it applies is quite
an anomaly. Our full size free plan feature
this month is double size and yet with
wingspan on only 38.1/4inches (971.5mm)
is to full quarter scale. Designed by Dr.Mike
Hawkins, this is a model of the Davis DA-9,
a little hot-rod designed and built is USA
by Leeon Davis who specializes is V-tail
homebuilt aircraft, thss one specifically for
a climb-to height competition.
Mike’s construction feature, together
with a Type History of the full size aircraft
tells all.
The DA-9 is really tiny with a wingspan of
only 15ft 7”, a fuselage that wraps around
the pilot like stiff sock only slightly longer.
it is not the smallest man carrying aircraft
ever built. So what was? That accolade
set the memory cells in motion, something
that takes time these days, but I had a
clue from which the internet came to
the rescue as it usually does after you’ve
asked the question in sufficient different
ways. For me, visual memory is always
better than ‘names’ and the one I had in
mind was a red and while stubby-stubby
biplane.
And the Internet obliged with detail of
photos of ‘Sky Baby’, built in 1952 with a
wingspan of just 2.2 meters (86.61”) by
Americans Robert Starr and Roy Stitts, and
was recognised for three decades as the
‘World’s Smallest’.
Then, in 1984, Robert Starr came back
with his 2.1meter (787.4mm) ‘Bumble Bee’,
now listed in Guinness Book of Records as
the new World’s smallest.

the Ebenezer Competition in July as well;
otherwise there will have been two years
without any Ebenezers!
The plan this year is to bring back
aero-activities for youngsters (it’s been
too long a gap) with simple gliders to
build and fly, some “fun-fly” sessions and
maybe a competition or two. They also
hope to have the BMFA Simulator. Any
youngsters who would like to join in, can
be registered in advance, so ModelAir can
plan accordingly.

have been forced to cancel their
Mayfly event scheduled for May 19th
because the Government has changed
its regulations, such that Shuttleworth
can hold only Drive-In events for a
period that extends beyond the
intended date.
ModelAir will do
what they can to find
alternative dates and in
the meantime, we can
all look forward to Scale
