never adopted by the air arm of its
country of origin, but is forever associated
with the early days of U.S. military aviation.
The French sold it to their Allies without
guns, which was a fat lot of good!

By the early 1930s, whilst the sun had yet
to set on the British Empire, it was well into
mid-afternoon. The march of progress,
worldwide, highlighted the need for more
swift communication between the ‘Mother
Country’ and the far-flung territories on

AMAZING GRACE!
Civil aircraft, the larger variety, that have
delivered ever-increasing passenger
loads to every corner of our planet are
rarely on most scale modellers’ To-Do lists.
The glamour of single engine warbirds,
or anything else with just a single engine,
offers a keep-it-simple approach that is,
understandably, enough to satisfy the
boundaries of ambition for most of us.
Understandably, even if it’s a model
with ‘JUSY’ two engines, it is best to know
your limits. Personally, I’ve only flown a
multi-engine scale model – one flight,
once, ever. I was asked to test fly a review
model of the old Svenson Britten Normal
Islander twin, way back in the days before
model aircraft electric power technology
was good for anything beyond lightweight
powered gliders.
Neither I, nor the trusting reviewer
(who had made a really great job of
the model) had any prior experience of
‘multis’, our only knowledge being that of
the hearsay of
“… one engine out; turn
into the ‘good’ engine and GET IT DOWN!”
So, with ‘both running’, off we jolly well
went!
Now, the Svenson Islander, originally
designed by David Vaughan, was a
very gracious lady, with kind flying
characteristics, but after three of four
circuits, there we were, “one-out”. The
Lady was gracious enough to ‘loose one’
in a very handy position in the circuit, so
that turning into the ‘good un’ for the
line-up to land was achieved with little
more that a severe rise in pulse rate …
but I NEVER FLEW A MULTI-ENGINE MODEL
AGAIN!
R/C electrics have made multi engine
scale so much more practical, the like of
which is demonstrated so convincingly by
Mike Roach’s 1930s-era De Havilland DH
86 ‘Express’, which graces our cover this
month and which is our feature – scale
modeling at its best.
