weden’s aviation heritage and industry is rarely in the
news, yet that heritage goes back as far as most nations.
With a history of go-it-alone neutrality, Sweden has
produced some highly effective aircraft types, both civilian
and warbirds, the latter with highly individualist shapes.
Among these must be counted the WW2-era Saab J-21 pod-and-
twin-boomer that originally had a pusher piston engine; the airframe
then developed into the jet powered J-21R jet. Then, post-WW2
came the Saab J-29 Tunnan, the J-32 Lansen, followed by the
‘double-delta’ J-35 Draken, and the J-37 Viggen.
One of the Swedish early-aviation pioneers was Enoch Thulin
whose manufacturing concern produced a succession of biplane
types up until 1918 when the Thulin Company failed. The torch was
then picked up by aviation engineer Henry Kjellson and aviation
pioneer-cum-naval officer Captain Gosta von Porat. Their co-
operation led to the creation of the
FVM 01 Tummelisa
, a rather
attractively shaped biplane that served as an advanced trainer used
by the Swedish Air Force from 1926 to 1935.
The annual
Flying Legends Air Show
, held each July at the
Imperial War Museum airfield, Duxford has a reputation of including
unusual types in its display program and back in 2007 that included
Mikael Carlon’s suberb Tummelisa replica.
Parked on the display line it was an opportunity for a close-up
detail photo study that your editor could not pass up and which is
part of this month’s
Subjects for Scale
feature.
A really attractive little biplane well worth considering for a scale
flying model.
