ust hours before this issue of FSM was due to go to press ,
Ken and Sheila Sheppard of
ModelAir
confirmed that this
year’s
Scale Weekend
at the Shuttleworth Air Museum, Old
Warden, Bedfordshire, will take place over the September
19-20th weekend.
Inevitably, due to the present and ongoing Covid 19 situation
there will be restrictions which include pre-booking and socially
distanced parking, but
ModelAir
hope to make it as near to
normal as possible. As previously, Saturday will be a non-
competition fun fly day, but on Sunday there will be the usual
accolades for various model categories and outstanding models.
In terms of Sunday competitions, these will follow the usual low-
key approach, for which it is hoped there will be enough
WW1/WW2/Battle of Britain models to enable the staging of some
memorable impromptu displays.
Attendance will be by pre-booking on line only, for which the

The ModelAir Old Warden Scale Weekend is likely to be
the only mass, collective outdoor flying scale get-together

produced by John Lamont.
Among a wide breadth of
really interesting stuff, the latest
(August 2020) issue included an
update on a truly ambitious
and unusual R/C scale model

The paper used on this title is from
sustainable forestry
of a WW2-era warbird that had
previously been covered in
AMN a year earlier, when the
model had yet to fly.
The McDonnell XP-67 is a truly
unique aeronautical shape
that deserves recognition for
the scale modellers who made
it work and fly in scale model
form; it's our MASTER MODEL
feature this month.
I only ever met John Lamont
once, at the 2002 World Scale
Championships, held at
Tillsonburg, Ontario in Canada.
John was a member of the
Australian R/C Scale Team. The
awful shame of it all was that,
have travelled half way round
the world to compete, John's
model was disqualified on
noise emission grounds. It
reminded me of an old Royal
Air Force adage, that
"... rules
are for the obedience of idiots
and the guidance of wise
men...".
Make your own
judgement on that one!
Characteristically, John took
it all on the chin!
