As one of the very last piston-engined fighters, the Hawker Sea Fury is
a special kind of bird. Designed at the end of the Second World War at
a time jet aircraft were already seen as the future of combat aviation.
The Sea Fury had a thorough and extensive career nevertheless,
seeing action during the Korean War along with the FAA Fairey Firefly
Mk.V, mostly for strike missions but managed to achieve an air-to-air
kill against a MiG-15, quite a feat for a propeller driven aircraft.
After years of waiting for a decent model the small aircraft modelling
community got quite excited when Airfix announced a brand new Sea
Fury in 1:48. Indeed, this kit is pretty accurate overall, nicely detailed
and, as we’ll see, lends itself very well to various improvements if you
choose to do so.

FIGHTERS
For this build I chose to add a few accessories to bring it up to a higher
standard. I used Barracuda Studios engine cowling (BR48350), cockpit
(BR48347), resin wheels (BR48344) and metal landing gear (BR48345),
as well as the colourful decal sheet “Hawker Sea Fury Part 1”
Work started with surface preparation. With most of my models I spend
the first hours riveting and rescribing where needed. It adds visual
interest to the surfaces which is especially useful when the subject has
single colour surfaces. The Airfix kit is finely scribed and exhibits some
rows of raised rivets in places that I erased to start with. I then
proceeded to rivet the whole airframe using Rosie pounce wheels. The
MDC riveting tool was also used to depict other rivets and fasteners in
various places which isn’t too difficult once you get used to it and
practice a bit. A few panel lines were also added as well as a number
of access hatches using Voyager Model scribing templates. The plastic
used by Airfix is very soft and a pleasure to work with for this type of
improvement. In order to appreciate and monitor the work in progress,
I generally use Tamiya’s black Panel Line Accent Colour.
If you choose to tackle a full riveting job, you should plan your work in a
number of steps to avoid being discouraged and follow a logical
progress in order to avoid asymmetries and pattern discrepancies. It is
often easier to start the job along the panel lines and then add rivet
lines in between using reference points on the airframe.
