THE RITE OF LIFE
The defeat of Nagash in distant Hysh had sent ripples of causality across the realms. In Ghyran, the
Everqueen Alarielle was poised to capitalise on this with a grand resurgence, triggering a cascade of
consequences both glorious and dire.
She sang as she killed, her throat stinging with the
slow-burning power of the melody. She could feel a
tingling on the soles of her bare feet as the Oak of
Ages Past thrummed with power beneath her. The
colossal fallen tree, one of two legendary remnants
of the World Before Time, lay half-submerged in the
dank quagmire of Rotwater Blight. Here she would
weave a new beginning. Here she would bring to
bear the midsummer height of her power, not only to
make a statement but to turn the course of history.
If she could survive.
Splashing through the stinking, knee-deep
swampland of the Blight were mould-skinned
beastmen, their untidy manes matted into slabs that
bounced on their shoulders as they ran. Eyes rolling
wildly, their voices were raised in a cacophony, the
bleating and screaming like the din of a hundred
abattoirs. Towering, bull-headed monstrosities
waded through their ranks, those few healthy plants
that had fought their way to survival in the tainted
waters withering at the sheer evil of their aura
as they passed. Each brandished savage hacking
blades or had limbs that ended in axes, hatchets and
cleavers just as suited to felling trees as bisecting
their prey with each sweep. They stared at Alarielle
with the purest hatred, driven into a raging frenzy
by the purity of her song. Carried by four hulking
Ghorgons was the Dirgehorn, that Nurgle-fouled
Ghyranite artefact torn from the skull of a godbeast
to sound the death of nations. It had been shattered
over a century ago by the silver Stormhost of the
Hallowed Knights, yet in their wake, its fragments
