I think there are times in every modelmaker’s journey
where we fall unexpectedly but completely in love with a
subject. When I heard that the Eduard Romain Hugault
Special Edition boxing of the Hasegawa 1/32 P-40 was
going out of production I thought… OK I should snatch one
of those. But I wasn’t in any hurry to build it, so it languished
in my small stash for several years until one day I got asked
to build a cockpit for a book project. I thought… the Forty
will be perfect for that because it’s a wide open office and
with the standard simplistic Hasegawa detail, a perfect
canvas for adding details of my own.
At the time I really had no idea what aircraft I wanted to
build but as my stack of reference material grew one thing
became abundantly clear… This was a golden opportunity
for someone like me who loves weathering. The Curtiss P-
40, while one of the most iconic aircraft of World War II, is
also one of the most unappreciated and part of the reason
is because it fought in so many backwaters. From the
Aleutians to the dusty runways of China with the American
Volunteer Group’s Flying Tigers to sunbaked Italy with the
Tuskegee Airmen, Warhawks fought from the dirt. Then…
there were the Burma Banshees of the 80th Fighter Group
flying from primitive fields in India and Burma, harassing the
Japanese at close quarters and providing invaluable close
air support as well as protection for cargo planes flying The
Hump. These birds were truly filthy and as soon as I started
collecting Banshee photos I knew where this project was
going.
