A TRIBUTE
TO DARRELL
BURGE
The tragic and sudden
passing of Darrell
Burge on the night of
February 10/11th 2021
has left a void in the
lives of his family,
work colleagues and
friends. Darrell was
head of marketing for Airfix at Hornby and his
association with the brand goes back some thirty
years to when it was owned by Humbrol.
I first met Darrell – DB as he become known – 25
years ago, when the IPMS Nationals were held at
Castle Donington in the UK. I was helping out on
the Airfix stand and was told “you’ll like Darrell”
but being socially awkward at the best of times the
idea of a new face amongst familiar ones left me
apprehensive; I need not have been, one flash of
that mischievous smile and – literally – twinkling
eyes put me at ease as he asked “what are you
drinking?”.
Over the years a working relationship with DB
turned into a close friendship, he was always
generous with time, helpful, a good listener and
a source of support and encouragement. His
influence on Airfix saw the brand invigorated under
Hornby and he seemed to go from strength to
strength. The Airfix stand at Scale ModelWorld was
transformed into a professional looking affair with
videos, banners and 'reveals' on the Saturday which
always drew a crowd and lots of interest.
He was always looking for new angles and ideas,
including cultivating TV production companies and
celebrities like Top Gear’s James May. Only recently
he was working with another TV production
company that was looking at how Airfix make their
kits. One afternoon in 2010 DB rang me and said
“how would you like to write a book?’ And thus I
got my name on Bloomsbury’s cards and wrote The
Airfix Book of Scale Modelling.
Seeing DB at Scale ModelWorld was always a
highlight, you felt the weekend had truly begun
when he’d yet again ask “what are you drinking?”.
There are so many stories of late nights that
turned into early mornings, DB’s laugh carrying on
well into the small hours when he would finally get
to bed only to be up early the next morning, bright
as ever, his laugh ringing out amongst the sea of
hungover faces in the breakfast hall.
If ever there was the epitome of a 'lovely guy'
it was DB. Only recently we’d been talking about
future projects and ideas, and the thought that he
is no longer with us is unbearable in the extreme.
Up until the sad news broke Darrell had been fit
and healthy, you always got the feeling he’d outlive
everyone. His family have lost a partner, father and
grandfather who never got to see his grandchild,
his work colleagues have lost a man of exceptional
talent and energy, modelling has lost a champion
for the hobby and those close to him have lost a
dear and valued friend.

MH TSERNG, AFV CLUB
The recent death of Mr. MH
Tserng, owner of the Taiwanese
model manufacturer AFV Club, is
a major loss to the scale model
hobby and he will be deeply
missed by family, friends and
modellers alike. AFV Club was
founded by Mr Tserng, a hobby
shop owner at the time, in the
late 1980s and created kits of
subjects not covered by larger
manufacturers.
