MAN 10M is a 1963-built Leyland Titan PD3A/1, with Willowbrook H41/32F body, that started life with Stratford-upon-Avon Blue Motors Ltd,
registered 670 HNX, leet No. 3. In 1971 the vehicle, along with all the Stratford Blue leet was transferred to its parent company, Birmingham and Midland
Motor Omnibus Co. Ltd., better known as Midland Red, where it became No. 2003. When withdrawn in 1972, the bus was sold to IoM Road Services and
arrived on the island the same year, becoming MN 63, leet No. 63. Upon formation of Isle of Man National Transport in 1976 it became a key member of
that leet before it was withdrawn in 1981. It then passed over to the Isle of Man Tourist Board in Douglas and was re-registered to MAN 10M as seen here
outside the bus garage at Douglas station yard on 26 June 1983, prior to Manx Bus Preservation Group using it as a store. Sadly, the bus ended up at dealer
Birchall of Andreas and was scrapped in 1992. Picture: Jeff Colledge

In this early 1960s Huddersield scene, complete with ‘cobbled’ street and the Empress Ballroom in the background, County Motors’ CCX 716 is seen
parked up while on a service for Dewsbury via Mirield and Kirkheaton. It is a 1945 Guy Arab II with Roe L27/28R body, leet No. 68. When new, this bus had a
Utility Roe L27/28R body which County Motors rebuilt in 1947 and again in 1949, before gaining the one shown here in 1953. The bus was withdrawn in 1966.
Another County Motors double-decker is seen behind it.

series and the
second of our Colour File volumes which is based on the
superb collection of colour images from the 1950s-1970s
owned by Geoff Lumb, supported by a smaller number from Jeff
Information used in this publication has been sourced from
various PSV Circle publications, used with permission, which is
gratefully acknowledged. Please see page 98 for a summary of

A lovely rural scene taken by Geoff Lumb on an unrecorded date in the early 1960s, as County Motors’ YCX 538 passes the camera on a service
heading for Barnsley. This vehicle is a 1963 Leyland Leopard PSU3/1R which has Willowbrook B53F bodywork and is the company’s fleet No. 103.
When Yorkshire Traction took control of County Motors in October 1968, this bus became No. 391 in their fleet.
Colledge, who has also been responsible for researching the majority
of the material contained within these pages.
Once again I have tried to select a broad church of operations from
the south of England to the Highlands of Scotland, with diversions
to the Isle of Man and South Wales, the most easterly of operators in
Britain at Lowestoft, and many points in between.
From the scenic splendour of Fort William to the industrial
backdrop of Huddersfield, we see buses and coaches from all the
leading and many lesser-known manufacturers plying their trade. Tiny
independents like Bedwas & Machen UDC, who at one point had the
smallest municipal fleet in Britain and, the striking livery of well-known
and much-missed operator ‘Stratford Blue’ provide contrasts of many
kinds, all making their contribution to the rich tapestry of Britain’s
road transport history.
