INTRODUCTION
From the Ghoul Stars to the Veiled Region, the galaxy is engulfed in unnatural phenomena and ferocious warfare.
Psychic mutation runs rife across Humanity’s myriad worlds. The weft of realspace wears ever thinner as the
unfettered madness of the warp strains to break through. Yet in the Nephilim Sector, all is silence…
When the Great Rift opened, its
advent was a spur to anarchy and
upheaval across the galaxy. The
Imperium suffered terribly as
waves of empyric corruption beat
against its worlds, sowing mutation
and madness through its peoples.
Already perilous interplanetary
travel and communication became
more dangerous than ever as the
warp’s tides raged.
Mankind was far from the only
species affected, however. The
Cicatrix Maledictum spread its
diseased light across every race in
the galaxy, dragging each into the
escalating mayhem in a different
fashion. Ork Waaagh! after Ork
Waaagh! was triggered as the
greenskins’ worlds were engulfed in
warp storms and their psykers were
tormented with visions of bellowing
deities and galactic conquest. The
disparate Aeldari sought to harness
the swelling tides of empyric energy,
battle the unnatural warp-spawn
they unleashed and prey upon
those peoples already isolated
and beset by catastrophe. Alien
empires rose and fell. Everywhere
the worshippers of the Dark Gods
fought their way towards supremacy
as reality itself teetered upon the
brink of ultimate devastation.
Humanity’s response took the form
of the Indomitus Crusade. It saw
battle group after battle group of
warships and warriors push out
into the darkness to reinforce their
buckling defences. Yet Mankind
was not alone in seeking to restore
order. Deep in the Nephilim Sector
the alien Necrons had instigated
a plan of their own, a response so
grand and merciless that only they
could have concocted it.

KALLIDES’ QUEST
The Indomitus Crusade fleets were vast gatherings of military might, each with
their own path to follow, each broken down into huge battle groups so as to spread
their strength wide. Battle Group Kallides was one of the largest.
Indomitus Crusade Fleet Primus
was one of several fleets to assemble
around deep-void anchorages upon
the fringes of the Sol System, and was
undeniably the single largest and most
powerful of all the initial Indomitus
Crusade fleets. Boasting a full twenty-
six battle groups – led out into the stars
by Roboute Guilliman and Belisarius
Cawl – Fleet Primus alone possessed
the power to shake the very stars. This
was no gross misallocation of materiel
or act of vainglory on Guilliman’s part,
however; Fleet Primus’ overall strategic
mission was nothing less than the
reinforcement and stabilisation of the
entire Imperium Sanctus.
Much of Fleet Primus’ initial efforts
were angled towards the Segmentum
Solar, for countless threats were to be
found upon Terra’s very threshold. Yet
this was not true of all the fleet’s battle
groups. Some were charged instead
with pushing outwards into the deeper
dark of the war-torn Imperium Sanctus.
Each was assigned a quest deemed vital
to the overall success of the Indomitus
Crusade, and to Roboute Guilliman’s
overall aim of shoring up and making
safe the Imperium Sanctus. Battle Group
Erastus, for example, was sent to crush
the heretic war cults of the Ispolin
Sub-sector before they could trigger
a cascading warp breach and unleash
legions of Daemons upon the systems
to the galactic north of Terra. Battle
Group Noctus was sent racing towards
Armageddon, charged with a vital
mission known only to Groupmaster
LeVorne and her closest advisors.
Then there was the battle group whose
combined martial might was worth
several of the smaller forces put together
– Battle Group Kallides. Theirs would be
a stranger road.
Many of the battle groups of Fleet
Primus faced perils unleashed by the
opening of the Great Rift. Empyric
plagues, hordes of mutated monsters,
invasions by the Heretic Astartes and
uprisings by the deluded, the deranged
or the daemonically possessed were all
dangers encountered by Fleet Primus’
battle groups as they pushed outward
from the Sol System.
Certainly, as they advanced through the
war-torn sub-sectors of the Imperium
Sanctus, Battle Group Kallides met just
such dangers. So ferociously disturbed
was the sea of souls that they could travel
only in short warp jumps. This ensured
that the armies and warships of Battle
Group Kallides had ample time to blood
themselves against a myriad of heretic
foes, for they could hardly be avoided.
Yet this was not their true mission.
Instead, Battle Group Kallides were
charged with investigating the haunted
region of absolute silence detected in the
Nephilim Sub-sector.
THE DREAD ABSENCE
As the darkness of the Noctis Aeterna
drew back, the distress calls of countless
Imperial worlds rang out into the void.
From the systems of the Nephilim Sub-
sector, however, there was nothing but
silence. It swiftly became apparent that
the sheer absence of panicked screams or
morbid lamentations was both unusual
and deeply sinister; Crusade command
dared not leave the shrouded region
unexplored for fear of what terrors might
be left unchecked to lurk there. At best,
this was either a zone of space from
which the darkness of the Noctis Aeterna
refused to lift, or from which all Imperial
life had been eradicated – phenomena
in themselves that demanded further
investigation. At worst, some other
threat was simmering within the Zone
of Silence to the galactic south of Badab
and Nocturne. Something that had to be
swiftly countered.
‘You will be my
champion in this. You will
be the one who bears the
light of Imperial vigilance
into this dark and silent
void. To you I entrust
the advance guard of my
grand Fleet Primus, in
the certain knowledge
that you will drive back
the shadows and defeat
whatever evils they
conceal. To you I entrust
this hope.’
