PricewaterhouseCoopers’ research claims that
3,372 shops opened on the UK’s top 500 high
streets throughout the UK in 2018 but,
surprisingly, some 5,833 closed. Actually, I’m
not that surprised by that statistic. I’m sure
your local high streets are similar to ones near
me, where the number of boarded-up shops
and pubs outnumber those that are still open.
With that in mind, Kernow Model Rail Centre deserves
a huge round of applause for opening a new shop in the very
un-Cornish surroundings of Guildford. It’s a brave decision
because there is always a financial risk to a venture such as this,
but I’m sure that Chris Trerise and his team will have carefully
weighed everything up before taking the plunge.
The reason why I welcome Kernow’s decision is that we need
high street model shops to help our hobby survive. Internet
shopping is always going to be more convenient, so seasoned
modellers will know exactly what to buy and from where.
But with the huge amount of modelling equipment to choose
from and lots of conflicting advice, there’s no substitute for going
to a well-stocked model shop and speaking to helpful and
knowledgeable staff, especially if you’re a complete newcomer.
That’s what Kernow will bring to the people of Guildford.
We wish Kernow every good fortune with its new venture.
