BORIS Johnson faces

“chaos” after proposals
for a new “amber
watchlist” category
were abandoned.
The Prime Minister
(above) pledged to keep
travel rules during the
pandemic as simple as
possible and senior
sources ruled out any
new category.
But it has emerged
the head of the Joint
Biosecurity Centre,
which advises on travel
rules, has left her post
without a successor
being appointed.
The Government had
been considering the
new watchlist for
nations at risk of being
moved into the red
group, which requires
hotel quarantine on
return for 10 days at a
cost of £1,750 per adult.
But following a
backlash by Tory MPs,
ministerial concerns
and complaints from
the travel industry,
Government sources
confirmed there would
be “no amber watchlist”.

are continuing to rage
across parts of Turkey, Greece,
Spain and Italy, with entire villages
and beaches being evacuated.
Coastal areas are among the
worst-affected, with fires blazing
for a FIFTH day in some of Turkey’s
Mediterranean resort towns.
Residents and tourists were
rescued by small boats during the
weekend, as the coastguard and
navy ships waited further out to sea
in case a larger-scale evacuation
was needed.
There are more than 120 fires in
Turkey alone, with eight people
confirmed dead and 27 more being
treated in hospital.

GREGGS has said it
plans to open around
100 new stores by the
end of the year after a
rebound in sales helped
return the chain to
profit.
The high street bakery
business said it has an
opportunity to grow to
3,000 stores as it
struck an ambitious
tone after withstanding
the impact of COVID.
It told investors that
the recovery in trade in
recent months was
“stronger than we had
anticipated” as it saw
strong trade in suburban
areas and on local
high streets.
The group has also
targeted growth areas
such as delivery and
drive-thru sales after
the pandemic weighed
on some core trade,
such as its travel sites.
Greggs said its
like-for-like sales for
the four weeks to the
end of July were 0.4%
above the levels it saw
in the same period in
2019, before the
pandemic struck.
The Newcastle-based
business said it now
expects full-year profits
to be “slightly ahead”
of previous predictions

after word quickly spread that a man-eating
croc was on the loose.
It was spotted on top
of a transformer behind
a locked gate in a
Western Power Distribution
substation.
An engineer gingerly
approached it and found
the crocodile was in fact
a “very realistic toy”.
A spokesman said:
“After reports that a
crocodile had been seen
in a substation in the
Barbourne
area
of
Worcester, one of our
engineers visited the
site and discovered that
the animal was, in fact,
a toy. It will now be
removed.

deaths reach
record high
DRUG-related deaths in
England and Wales have
risen for the eighth year
in a row.
There were 4,561
deaths related to drug
poisoning registered in
England and Wales in
2020, the Office for
National Statistics said.
It’s the highest number
since records began in
1993 and up 3.8% from
the previous year.
Due to delays in death
registration, around half
of the deaths will have
occurred in the previous
year and the majority
before the coronavirus
pandemic, the ONS said.
Drug-related deaths
have risen by 60.9% in
the last 10 years, from
49.4 deaths per million in
2010 to 79.5 deaths per
million in 2020.
Of the deaths registered
last year, 2,996 were
related to drug misuse
and 2,263 involved an
opiate.

another species.
“It’s certainly not
native and my guess
would be that it’s an
escaped or abandoned
captive animal, but I
don’t know what species
are likely to be kept as
such.”
Colin
Stevenson,
head of education at
Crocodiles of the World
in Brize Norton, said
escaped reptiles would
not last long in the UK
climate, adding: “Even
in the warmest British
weather, it’s chilly for
a crocodile.
“There have been
crocs and alligators
released in the UK. We
have one here that was
found in a reservoir
in Bristol.
“But it wouldn’t have
been in the reservoir
long before capture.
“If
an
alligator
survived the summer
months, it would start to
decline in autumn and
die by early winter.
“A larger animal, one
potentially capable of
giving a nasty bite,
would not survive.”
TERRORIST WANTED
TO ‘KILL THE QUEEN’
A TERRORIST who stabbed
two people had become
increasingly violent in
prison and declared he
wanted to “kill the Queen”,
an inquest heard.
Sudesh Amman, 20, was
shot dead by police in
Streatham, south London,
in February 2020, ten days
after leaving prison.
While in HMP Belmarsh,
Amman openly expressed
“extreme views”, including
his intention to become a
suicide bomber, jurors at
the Royal Courts of Justice
were told.
Amman injured a man
and woman in the attack
on Streatham High Road
before he was killed by
surveillance officers.
He had been jailed for
40 months in 2018 for
preparing and engaging in
acts of terrorism.
Jurors heard that an
assessment
by
Leon
Campbell, a probation
officer, said Amman posed
a high risk of serious
harm to members of the
public
“due
to
his
promoting of extremist
ideas and wanting to
carry out a terrorist act”.
The inquest continues.
