Weathering is finishing
glance at the pages of
FineScale Modeler
or
any modeling website
reveals that painting and finish-
ing are the focus of the hobby. I
think it is a function of three
things.
First, by and large, kits are
better now than they ever have
been. That means most of us
have to spend less time fina-
gling parts together with filling
and sanding.
Second, there are kits avail-
able for many more subjects
than ever before. Take a look at
an issue of
FSM
from the 1980s
and you’ll see many articles
about conversions and kitbashes
to produce a particular version
of a tank or plane. That’s a lot
less necessary now.
Third, there has been an
explosion of weathering tech-
niques and supplies; I have
referred to it as a renaissance
for modeling. I remember 35
years ago being dumbfounded
by the effects that modelers
were achieving with techniques
that seemed revolutionary at
the time, notably washes, dry-
brushing, and pastels. Today,
these techniques have been
joined by a host of new ideas,
including pre- and post-shad-
ing, color modulation, filters,
dot filters, chipping, mapping,
and more. In addition, the mar-

ketplace is crowded with new
products that complement the
existing techniques and make it
easier than ever to add realism
to your models. These include
pigments, premixed washes and
terrain textures, enamels and
acrylics with the perfect sheen
to replicate fresh and older fluid
spills and stains, and more.
Now, any discussion of
weathering always leads to a
discussion about how much to
do and where does realism end
and artistry begin. It’s some-
thing we hear all the time. Let
me respond by saying, I don’t
have a dog in this fight.
FSM
is
here to present ideas and tech-
niques. You are free to pick and
choose what works for you. If
you want to build every model
as if it has just returned from
the front and is being held
together with rust and a prayer,
have at it. If you prefer an as-
new, right off the assembly line
finish, go for it. Personally, I
aim for something in between
these extremes.
That said, I love trying new
products, techniques, and ideas.
Hopefully, the articles in this
special weathering issue will
help you find something you
can use on your next project.
