ello and welcome to the
November 2019 issue of
RadioUser.
It was great to
see so many of you at the
National Hamfest. I have en-
joyed talking to you and getting to know
so many radio groups and associations
I was not aware of. I have incorporated
some of the ‘flavours’ of this year’s big
event into this issue, as you will see.
Autumn is here, the nights are getting
longer, DXers come out of their summer
torpor, and radios are being dusted off.
To facilitate your listening pleasure and
help you look in the right places, I have
added some additional reviews of fre-
quency lists, listening resources and sea-
sonal guidebooks to this issue. In this is-
sue, you will find, for example, reviews of
new versions of a well-known
NDB DXing
Guide,
and of the BDXC’s updated list of
Radio Stations in the UK and Ireland.
Ireland is also the topic of our main
book review this month, and a very inter-
esting title this is.
There are two features with a predom-
inantly historical background this month.
While Tony Smith delves into the history
of the very early broadcast hobbyists and
experimenters, I am speculating on how
a new biography of Nikola Tesla, which
has just been published to great acclaim,
might, perhaps, alter our perceptions of
this pioneering inventor.
Radio history will also feature a little
more prominently from now on, as Scott
Caldwell’s column will be coming out on
a monthly basis very soon.
Moreover – and in the context of the
current climate debates – Keith Hamer
and Garry Smith begin a two-part explo-
ration of how climate and weather (the
climate at your location) affect us as ra-
dio enthusiasts, in terms of propagation,
monitoring, data interpretation, forecast-
ing, and DXpeditions.
Regarding the latter, watch out for a
new
RadioUser
series on mobile DXing,
from January 2020.
