Welcome
wo things happened of note
this month. The first is that
HRH Prince Philip passed
away at the age of 99. Joining
the Royal Navy as a young man, he was
there when Greece fell, as told in last
month’s magazine, and served aboard
ships in various actions across the
Mediterranean. When Queen Elizabeth
ascended to the throne, after the war,
he had to put aside his naval career
and ended up being the longest living
consort in Britain’s very long history.
He founded the Duke of Edinburgh
award scheme that helped thousands
of young people and was patron of
hundreds of societies, especially those
with youth, naval or conservation
elements. His was a life of service well
lived and here at
The Armourer
we offer
our thanks and respects.
The other thing that happened
was, of course, meeting step two
of Lockdown being lifted as non-
essential retail and outdoor activities
resumed. Anything classified as indoor
hospitality remained closed so, in the
news page, we have stories on how
museums are tackling this. Some are
remaining closed until 17 May, which
is the earliest date for step three, when
all indoor attractions will re-open,
while those with substantial outdoor
areas are either re-opening now or
partially re-opening. On the festivals
front, the boldest move has been by
Chalke Valley, declaring that it would
go ahead, scant days after the step four
of easing of Lockdown. We will report
these things as they happen online at
www.armourer.co.uk
and round them
up in the news pages.
Now, to this issue and a distinctly
naval flavour. As well as the cover

It’s the fight to sink the pride of the
Kriegsmarine that’s the cover feature
though and after the shocking loss of
HMS
Hood
the Admiralty would stop at
nothing to avenge her loss. The Royal
Navy hunted the
Bismarck
down and
threw everything at the steel behemoth
in order to sink her. The cover artwork
this month was courtesy of our friends
at the MMO game, World of Warships,
so our thanks to them. The story of
the sinking was, of course, turned
into a black and white film that still
is gripping today, though the special
effects are understandably of their time.
Also this month, one of our readers
wrote in with a suggestion of a feature
on the von Trapp family, the ones that
were the inspiration for
The Sound of
Music.
The father of the family has a
surprising history – see the letters page
for the details. We are certainly going
to look into it which leads me to the
final comment this month and that is
if you do have an idea for an area of
interest you’d like to see a feature on,
