N APRIL 15, 1952 the rst
ight of America’s newest
warplane – Boeing’s enormous
B-52 Stratofortress – took place
from the company’s air eld
outside Seattle, Washington.
Almost 70 years later the B-52,
a utilitarian weapon of war,
has acquired near-mythical
status after a career spanning
more than half the 118 years of
manned ight, with no end in
sight – indeed, it seems likely that
the last B-52s, built more than
60 years ago, will carry on till
they’ve chalked up their century!
Still going strong - the
enduring legend of the
Because of its high-pro le
involvement in the Cold
War – and the rst war to be
extensively televised, Vietnam
– the B-52 attracted wide public
attention. Stanley Kubrick’s
movie, Dr Strangelove, featured
the bomber and since then
popular culture has given its
name to a drink, a hair-style and
a rock group.
Boeing called the B-52
‘Stratofortress’, carrying on the
Fortress theme that started with
the B-17 Flying Fortress and
moved on through the B-29 and
B-50 Superfortresses.
As a result of the carpet
bombing of jungles during the
Vietnam War it gained the
monikers ‘Monkeyknocker’ and
‘Coconutknocker’. Today it is
known as the Buff, an acronym
and an affectionate nickname:
the letters stand for Big (no
argument there); Ugly (many
won’t agree); and then we get
the rst big disagreement – the
rst ‘F’ means either Friendly
(depending on whose side
you’re on) or Fat (although some
versions look quite svelte).
However, the last ‘F’ denotes
either Fellow (which we use,
being a polite publication) or
another four-letter word, which
we de nitely will NOT use!
In these 108 pages we give
the reader an insight into what
has made the Buff such an
icon. Conceived as a Cold War
instrument of Armageddon,
it morphed into a bomb-truck
to devastate miles of jungle
in Southeast Asia and then
launched cruise missiles against
Saddam Hussein and Milosevic.
Today it continues to be a
key part of America’s nuclear
deterrent and is acknowledged
as one of the most important
and versatile aircraft in the
US Air Force’s inventory. Air
Force Global Strike Command,
now expects the B-52 to outlive
the much newer Rockwell
B-1B and Northrop B-2 in USAF
service, serving alongside the
forthcoming B-21.
