The MiG-29 was developed to counter new USAF fighter such as the
F-15 Eagle and F-16 Fighting Falcon. With the NATO reporting name
“Fulcrum” the twin-engine fighter aircraft entered service as the first
fourth-generation jet fighter with the Soviet Air Forces in 1982.
Designed to function while operating from unprepared airstrips the
Fulcrum can close the two main air intakes and takes the air from
slats on top of the fuselage.
In the West it has a fearsome reputation for its superb
manoeuvrability, which can even outperform the F-16 in both
instantaneous and sustained turns.
The lack of modern electronics and the limited range of less than
nine hundred miles on internal fuel and lack of inflight refueling
ability making it only useful as a defensive fighter.
In 1988 the Jagdgeschwader 3. from Preschen of the German
Democratic Republic received their first MiG-29A. I really like the 4-
colour camouflage of the East German MiG’s, therefor it is a must
have in my model collection. Especially the plane with serial number
684 has an interesting lighter camo and the “Q” marking, which
stands for a good quality maintenance and readiness of the aircraft.
