SYNOPSIS for MOSAIC
As the following diagrams show, the music for „Mosaic“ came from the idea to draw onto the canvas of sound.
The idea for the album came around after a visit to an exhibition of John Cage“s art work at Glasgow University. There
was no music at this exhibition but I was inspired to write these songs by the art work from Cage and I made an obvious
connection that I could „paint“ simple drawings on to the „canvas“ of music. So I designed a „flat“ body of music and
„painted“ on to this body simple and abstract ideas and shapes to create the final tracks.
I began with writing ten tracks of music, each about seven to eight minutes long. Then these ten tracks were loaded into
Cubase, arranged in parallel, and on the resulting „canvas” of track lanes I „painted pictures“ onto the tracks themselves
– the grey patches in the following Cubase screenshots.
All the grey areas in the track lanes are in fact sections of silence (muted parts); in effect it is this silence in the tracks
that makes each song different. (The final song called „Unmade“ is in fact the first song I wrote, unchanged, although I
reversed the track to un-make it.)
Through the use of the grey areas of silence and muting certain tracks in every piece of music, the construct of the
album slowly took on its own form and shape, resulting in this dark ambient piece of music you now have before you.

Canvas 1:
This shows the „peaks“ that I drew onto the finished song which reminded me of simple mountain drawings.
Therefore this song was called „Altitude“.
Canvas 2:
In this diagram of music I drew gradients moving away up and through the picture.
It follows that this track is called „Gradients“.
Canvas 3:
On canvas 3 I drew „waves“ onto the canvas of music.
This track is naturally called „Waves“.
Canvas 4:
And of course in „Boundaries“ I drew blocks to create barriers in the music.
