cinema. Steve, Jamie and I thought the limited
release of
The Cold Blue
was too tempting a
prospect to miss. We weren’t disappointed.
This new documentary melds footage from
William Wyler’s original wartime
Memphis Belle
propaganda lm
with outtakes, and the reels have been fully restored in glorious 4K
high de nition, ensuring a vivid visual experience. Absorbing as the
whole production is, it is the stories of the B-17 crews themselves
that hit home. The footage certainly prompted us to imagine what
life must have been like in a freezing fuselage thousands of feet over
Germany, running the gauntlet of ak and ghters.
We do seem to be in a purple patch at present in terms of
aviation being in front of the cameras, and that can only be a
good thing. In 2018 we had
Hurricane
and
303 Squadron
, and
Lancaster Skies
has made the rounds this year. The recent high-
budget
Catch-22
on Channel 4, with B-25 Mitchell warbirds
and other aircraft used in the lming, also adds to the small
screen and cinematic renaissance of aerial combat. Of course, the
budgets vary and so does the quality, but the very fact that these
A
projects are happening means new generations get to understand
the sacri ces of those gone before.
Mind you, we’ll reserve judgement on the forthcoming
‘blockbuster’
Midway
as it could be every bit as Hollywood as
2001’s
Pearl Harbor
. The trailer looks exciting enough though.
The travails of a particularly fascinating World War Two pilot are
explored in this issue’s
Women in Aviation,
with a study of the
female Soviet ace Lidiya Litvyak. It’s a truly engaging story of a
young woman ghting in the maelstrom of the Eastern Front before
her untimely death.
And don’t miss our exclusive on the Aircraft Restoration Company’s
stunning Lysander restoration with air-to-air and workshop photos. As
you’ll see from our focus on ARCo’s spin-off the Aerial Collective, the
public will soon be able to y in its ‘Lizzie’ and Blenheim, via limited
ights through the airshow season. What a mouth-watering prospect!
