Setting the Scene
I
have often said that the
art of the diorama, and
the imagination of those
modellers who produce them
never ceases to amaze me. Whether
inspiration comes from personal
experience, their own inventiveness
or from something they have seen
in a book, a magazine or a
documentary, the way that
these elements are brought
together in a large of
small scene is always
a real eye opener.
The diorama builder
is also now able to call
upon a veritable plethora of
accessories from manufacturers
from around the globe that can
cater for anything from a small bottle
to a full building! Of course, there is
always scratch building to be done, and
again the ingenuity of modellers to
use a diverse range of objects to create
something new is astonishing! This
month we have two full diorama
builds and two others that use a
pre-printed backdrop to give the
impression of a scene. Robin Gilby
brings a pair of diorama builds with
his ‘Objective Antwerp’ and ‘Small But Deadly’
features, whilst Lee Powell and Dawid Branski
both use Coastal Kits display bases to show off
their models. The latter are becoming a very
popular way of displaying projects, by using
realistic photographic-style backgrounds,
and they really do liven up a build.
Our ‘Big Build’ this month features
the Zvezda SA-22 ‘Greyhound’
Anti-Aircraft System and
looks quite spectacular
in its black grey and
white scheme, and
Jezz Coleman has
done a superb job
with the build. Also
Matt Edwards brings
another of his step-by-step
articles with the MiniArt M.1
Grant as an ‘Alamein Warrior’.
So as always there is plenty to enjoy
in SMMI, and all that remains for me to
say is….
