W
e are living in troubled times. Last month’s
Welcome
made mention of how the stormy weather battering Britain had me
longing for airshow season, but as I write these words, much of the globe is gripped by the coronavirus pandemic and all
that it entails. Lives have been lost, travel plans cancelled, quarantines put in place and whole regions forced into ‘lockdown’.
In the UK we also face the postponement or axing of events attracting large numbers of people. Undoubtedly, airshows here will be
included if the government imposes a blanket ban. Indeed, we’ve just heard that New Zealand’s popular biennial Warbirds Over
Wanaka has been cancelled. So, despite tempting you last month with some mouth-watering prospects in our free Airshow Guide,
many displays around the world may not go ahead and even if they do, getting there could be ‘challenging’ with so many flights being
scrubbed. My heart goes out to all those event organisers who have spent months putting together great displays – only for their
efforts to be in vain. It’s a developing situation, but where possible we’ll keep you informed via social media and the Key.Aero website.
We’d strongly recommended you also keep yourselves updated by checking the websites of the relevant airshows. While it’s easy to
gripe about the disappointment any cancellations will cause, our first priority must be helping to combat the spread of this disease.
Whatever happens, the
FlyPast
team has plans in place to continue working and we’ll strive to bring you plenty of historic aviation
stories to take your mind off things.
