is able to handle WMA files, which Windows
Media Player 10 will create from your CDs
automatically. However, if you own a device
that doesn’t play Windows Media files, you
can set Windows Media Player 10 to turn
CDs into MP3 format instead – go to the
Tools menu, click Options, and from the Rip
Music tab select MP3.”

ello and welcome to another
edition of Microsoft Windows XP:
The Official Magazine. Have you
noticed how much people are talking
about digital music these days? From
kids wanting to download the latest
pop tracks to their portable players, to
connoisseurs transferring their
collection of classic vinyl LPs to a PC
for safe keeping, everybody has been
bitten by the Media Player bug.
My father-in-law was delighted the
other day when he realised he could
play his new Johnny Cash CD on the
PC in his back room instead of
bothering his wife with it in the living
room. Remember, PCs even make it
possible to create your own songs –
see our cover disc and the tutorial on
page 88 for inspiration.
Such eventualities are thankfully
very rare, but you don’t want to be the
unlucky person who loses all their
important files.
On our disc this month you’ll find a
selection of backing-up and recovery
tools, which I urge you to plan into your
PC security routine. When you’ve
bought music from the internet, you
also need to back up your licences – in
Media Player 10, go to Tools, then
License Management, and click on
Backup Now (remember to save the
licence backups somewhere safe).
You’ll find stacks of other useful
advice and tips inside the magazine, so
have fun, and I’ll see you next issue.
KEEP IT SAFE
With all your music on your computer
(and probably photos and videos as
well) the importance of keeping it safe
needs to be highlighted. You’ve got to
back-up your cherished files or risk
losing them in the event of hard-drive
failure or theft.
